I’m a beginner in SEO looking to change careers and learn SEO.

Ahrefs & Semrush are the two “top dogs” of SEO tools as far as research is concerned.

Are there other tools that do a comparable job but actually free? (Some might be free but have limitations)

What are free tools to use that do a great job for SEO research where paying is not necessary?

But I also hear paying for Ahrefs or Semrush is worth it because of their value and “you get what you pay for” -which makes sense.

Hey! So ive spent years testing pretty much every seo tool out there. Here are some solid free ones that actually help: Google Search Console - gives u direct data from google about ur site performance Ubersuggest (free version) - keyword research n basic competitor analysis Ahrefs Webmaster Tools - limited but good for checking backlinks n site health answerthepublic - great for content ideas n understanding what ppl search for But honestly for link building specifically, most free tools are pretty trash. They usually just give u a list of random sites or automate spammy forum posting which can hurt ur rankings. What actually works is: getting quoted in legit news sites/blogs (through HARO etc) building real relationships w bloggers in ur niche creating link-worthy content If ur looking to automate reporter outreach specifically, check out backlinker ai (full disclosure - i built it). But even without tools, manual outreach to quality sites will get u way better results than those "1000 free backlinks" tools that just spam links everywhere lmk if u need any other specific recommendations! happy to share what ive learned from years of trial n error in this space

GA4 and Search Console are best free tools. I use a free version of Cairrot to track LLM crawls on our Wordpress websites. I use Keywords Everywhere browser plugin for keyword research. Technically not free but the API is so cheap it feels like it.

I’ve been testing out a few SEO audit tools lately that give instant website scores, keyword insights, and performance checks - no signup or setup required.

I noticed some newer tools are getting pretty good at analyzing on-page issues and technical SEO factors in seconds. Curious what others here are using in 2025 - especially for quick checks or client reports.

Do you stick to classics like Ahrefs, Semrush, or Screaming Frog, or are there any newer tools that impressed you lately?

(If anyone’s curious, I can share the one I recently tried that gives full SEO scores for free - not dropping a link since I know promo links aren’t allowed here.)

I still end up using Ahrefs free tools and Neil Patel’s Ubersuggest for quick checks, mostly out of habit. But lately I’ve been impressed by some newer ones like SEOlyzer and Sitechecker, which give fast, no-login audits with pretty clean reports. They’re not as deep as Semrush or Screaming Frog, but for quick client previews or a surface scan, they save a lot of time. I kinda like tools that don’t need me to connect Google Search Console or wait for a crawl — just paste the URL and boom, instant results.

For quick checks, I still find Ubersuggest pretty handy, especially for fast on-page audits and keyword ideas without logging in. But lately, I’ve been liking Sitechecker and Seobility too. They give clean, easy-to-read reports that are great for quick client overviews. Screaming Frog is still a go-to for deep dives, but for speed and simplicity, some of these newer tools are stepping up.

Im a software dev thats currently digging into programmatic SEO. I created a free tool called websiteleaderboard(dot)com (<- trying to respect rule #2 there). I built it over the past week or so, so it is still very rough around the edges!

My site ranks bunch of websites by their google page speed insights as kind of just a fun little leaderboard thing but the bigger picture goal is to provide a free suite of tools to help folks improve seo posture. Right now i pull in data from google search console, similar web, ahrefs, and built with and provide that to users for free.

Eventually, i plan to incorporate more stuff here around like a "my website" dashboard where we centralize data from other tools such as google analytics, stripe, etc.

Like i mentioned before, I am pretty new to the seo thing so if anyone has cool ideas, favorite tools they are currently using or things that are super annoying/difficult to do right now, I would love to hear it and build it in!

Interesting, just wondering how this works with PageSpeed Insights given that one minute I can go check and get a 100% Performance score, then go back an hour later and get 80-something, it's wildly up and down when checked during a 24-hr period. Debugbear seems to produce much more consistent results. Also, most of the "leaders" on the page are super simple example pages, so I don't get what the value of that comparison is.

SEO is confusing. There are so many terms and processes. Even when I understand them, fixing things is hard.
I need a tool that:
Scans my site and explains problems simply.
Shows me step-by-step how to fix things.
Tells me what to focus on first.
Most tools give too much data and no clear answers. Does something simple exist? Sort of a one click solution (ik it seems too utopian, but still asking)

I have been a pretty big Neil Patel fan for a while and I've used a number of SEO tools before and recently tried his ubersuggest tool. Additionally I tried ask the people which I haven't done before. Those were fairly easy to get the hang of. However I wanted to chime in what others have suggested because I suck at analytics. I am totally right brained and stare at spreadsheets and start feeling my brain matter leaking from my ears I get so overwhelmed. If you take data from any of these tools, get a spreadsheet or a PDF version of it or even just copy and paste sections and give it to the chat along with a prompt just asking it to act as an SEO expert for your niche and to interpret the data and give you suggestions, it is absolutely fabulous at doing stuff like this. It will be your ultimate assistant. I wish more right brained marketers weren't giving LLMs and AI the shifty eye in fear for their job because if they just embraced it and speak with it the right way, it can be so great at helping with stuff like this. I absolutely recommend trying the chatgpt method. It will help.

I mean I could be overestimating but I truely believe SEMRUSH is the best tool for people who know nothing about SEO because yh it will flag whats urgent and whats not and show you how to fix things and why they are a problem. I think it might seem overwhelming at first but I taught myself it from scratch with no help and it maybe took me a few hours to make significant progress

All in one local tools don't really exist to be honest. When they do offer all or most of the tools you're looking for, they are only great at one or two. I'd especially be wary of this "give recommendations". Tools today, especially the big SEO suites, have a tendency to recommend nonsense just because there is hype or a trend about it and they don't want to be left out. They also all have tendency to recommend things that bring you back to their tool suite or to another tool / service they own. Layer in LLM-AI tech and you can get total junk recommendations pretty easily. Run from any tool that claims they can automate everything for you - it will break your SEO ultimately. I would also try and put a firewall between: Recommendations and Audit + Build citations if at all possible (hire a consultant locally for recommendations and do the work yourself via your tools). Finally, you're only getting a few parts of Local SEO. If you used one tool for all of these things it would: Audit your technical SEO and content, give recommendations on technical SEO and content, build citations for you and/or give you a list of places to get citations / sell those to you. Instead of this I would recommend the following for a solid 2025 proof local SEO strategy today: Citation Building - Bright Local or Fat Joe (no relation) - Note: Neither are GREAT, Bright Local is probably the best available atm. Citation Finding - Whitespark Audit - SEMrush, Ahrefs (if you don't know what you're doing) and Screaming Frog (if you know what you're doing) Other tools for Auditing by yourself - Google Search Console, GTMetrix, PageSpeed Insights Measuring Map Position Changes - Local Falcon, Places Scout - Note: Local Viking isn't great and all of your data is public, Local Dominator I'm not certain about. Instead of free, there are affordable ones. I can't afford Semrush and Ahrefs. I was lucky to have full access at a company I worked at. To be honest, I don't need a platform that's so comprehensive. This post helped me find 2 tools that I use now. LowFruits and SEOBoost. It comes to around $20 per month each. Still a fraction of the cost. I was already using AIOSEO (basic). To optimize for AI engines, I'm using GPTrends (the free version). I've tried out a few tools. This one stuck. My total bill for all the tools is approx $45 per month. Totally worth it.

So, a few issues. Firstly, it looks like a white label of a tool that's had been around years ago. For an experiment, I put in Microsoft.com to test one of my favorite pages. You're basically giving binary advice format system that has no contextual understanding of the SEO strategy and I would say this tools is dangerous at best. Lets dig into a few obvious examples Page Title Too short You said the page title is "too short" - this is nonsense. Show me where Google has EVER suggested a page length IF the page is about OFfice 365 and that's the root keyword, then "Office 365" is the exact length a page title needs to be Putting in more doesn't mean rank more or rank higher This is dangerous advice because: Somebody could be first for "Microsoft 365 Consultant" and then add something like "Outlook Mail" and have no topical experience OR there could be no search for "Microsoft 365 consultant - Outlook mail" - and they could lose all of their ranking. SEO isn't about putting in as much content as possible into every page title. You said the home page URL was "clean" and "Excellent" - its hard given that you said the page title was too short and the enormous relationship between the title and the URL in ranking. I hope nobody uses this tool until you come up with one that works

Tools are just tools. They're helpful, but they won't do all the work for you. You'll still need to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty with the nitty-gritty of SEO. Since you're in the cleaning business, focusing on local SEO is super important. Make sure whatever tool you pick can help you dominate your local search results.
