One of the things I did while I was shopping is take a key and attempt to scratch the surface. The scratch resistance and overall thickness of the product or what led me to when I chose. I have used shaw flooring in hundreds of homes. I have supplied it direct from the warehouse and have installed it via menards. What most of those bad complaints are, is people buying the worst quality they can get, and then being upset it's cheap shit? The one talking about the floor coming up in 6 months, I would put money that it was a DIY who didn't install it correctly. Probably had it tight wall to wall and it buckled cuz it had no room to expand and contract. The floors do scratch fairly easily, but if you put felt pads on your furniture legs you're fine. And as far as dog nails, the vinyl planks hold up better than wood for scratches. Shaw is typically a very nice product. But they do have low quality stuff for realllly cheap. More on reddit.com

The people that are mad didn't read the instructions or at least didn't follow them. The larger format planks have very strict requirements for floor flatness and people want to run them with no moldings. Some of these issues could be fixed by putting t moldings in doorways. Other solutions is gluing the floor in. The larger planks seemingly due to microscopic particles will have this weird very light crack popping noise that can take some time but seemingly dissipates. I've talked to a bunch of people about it (they where at surfaces so they aren't just any "Joe" at Surfaces) and for some reason I'm the only person I've met that's seen it more than 4x in person and not as a story (it seems to only happen on the wide and longer like 70+" products from any company so it's not directly an issue with the products as it's also wpc and spc) The vast majority of issues I see are floor flatness, pinching/expansion space related, Moisture coming through concrete, rolling loads on click floors, improper product for the application, random other install issues, random consumers doing things to damage the floor, and last is actually defective products. Newbie here and new homeowner.
We are planning to redo the flooring in our home, around 1200 square feet of LVP Flooring for the main level and bedrooms.
After some research and hearing "don't go with big box stores" we found Shaw's distinction plus timeless oak flooring. Seems to run around $6 at our local flooring stores which adds up. A lot of posts I'm seeing people pay more like $3-4/sq ft. Are we overdoing it or is it worth it? Any other recommendations for something similar? Or perhaps there is a better place to buy this type of flooring we don't know about?
We plan to install ourselves and so buy material only.

We went with Mannington adura max and put it in ourselves. 5/5, would recommend. It was incredible against kids and dogs, had a pad on the back, and I thought the pattern was the least computer-generated-looking compared to most others.

I am planning on installing floating vinyl plank flooring (LVT) in the finished part of my basement over a sub-floor (~400 sq ft, self-installed). I had selected Shaw Avalon from Menards as my choice of LVT. However, upon doing some research on the Shaw brand, I found most customer reviews on sites are pretty terrible:
DO NOT BUY THIS FLOORING. I am a broker for real estate and even the cheapest floors in spec homes look better than mine. I hope one day to be able to afford to rip these out and get them out of my home. BUYER BEWARE!!
This flooring scratches so easily. Have been very careful with furniture, but doesn’t matter. Have scratches in places where I can’t imagine what happened. Everything shows. Spent a fortune on this flooring and it looks horrible. Beware! Wouldn’t recommend it.
wish there was a minus rating. This stuff is crap! It's supposed to have a 30 year warranty, but it started coming apart in six months. I've written to Shaw three times with no response. Avoid this flooring! Now I have to tear it all up and replace it and I'm not happy about it.
DO NOT BUY SHAW Flooring. I purchased and installed Shaw Castlewood flooring in my entire house and the finish is paper thin. It simply scratches right off the surface. Within weeks of installation it peels off the surface with the slightest scratch.

Is there something I am missing when reading these Shaw brand reviews? For example, is there a particularly bad series of Shaw LVP/T that most people are reviewing, or is it really easy to screw up the install, etc.?
If Shaw is in fact considered a bad brand for LVP/T, what are some good LVT brands? I am having a hard time finding any brand without a significant number of bad customer reviews.

Look at specs. The best products are going to have a minimum 20 mil wear layer. Next you want to look at the finish. Aluminum oxide or ceramic bead are the best for scratch resistance. No vinyl is scratch proof and you should have felt on anything that touches the floor. Rugs at entry doors and keep any sand/grit cleaned up. As for installation issues, every product I’ve installed requires the floor to be flat. 1/8” or 3/16” in ten feet. That means no humps or dips. Also an expansion gap of 1/4” everywhere. Prep is the most important part of any flooring. These DIY products are great but if they aren’t installed to specs it’s a set up to fail and the manufacturer will not warranty installation.
