Hello! I’m trying to fix a leaky bathtub faucet and am starting with the shower cartridge. I’m not sure which type I have though. I’ve attached a few pictures and the number on the side says “2112”, but I can’t seem to find a corresponding replacement. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

That's a Moen control. It looks like it's probably a 1200 or 1225 and good news, those are interchangeable. The most straightforward approach is to turn off the water supplies and remove the cartridge, then you can take it with you to be certain you replace it with the same thing.

As a plumber the cartridge jobs are pretty annoying because we have to source out the exact part and come back, usually involves a couple visits. If its a Moen cartridge then yah the price is high. I've charged $500 to replace a higher end shower cartridge. Source out the cartridge yourself and have them just install it for a lesser fee. But this price seems par for the course to me. To update: I just bought a "10I-7H/C Hot and Cold Stem for Price Pfister Faucets" from Home Depot and used a large cresecent wrench to muscle the entire thing out of its socket by gripping onto the large exposed nut (not the skinny stem). It was screwed in so no damage done to the wall. Then just slipped the replacement in and it worked.

I have been successful a few times with this type of problem. The solution may take a week. The deposit appears to be calcium with some corrosion. Given its location you cannot get at it easily but if you soak a cloth with a mild acid, vinegar recommended, and pack it around the valve. Every few hours the cloth will dry out so soak it again with vinegar and put it back. This might take several days but for me it worked.

It depends on the brand of shower cartridge. Keep in mind that a plumber won't sell you a cartridge for the price they get them for. They need to make money on it, so a percentage is added. Then there is most likely a service call charge which is typically over $100. Wear and tear causes them to need replacement. For the most part, cartridges are usually plastic and rubber.
