Trump put a target on their backs, just like he did with the Haitians so right wingers got their new sanctioned targets to be vocally racist about. Edit: I find all the comments trying to defend the racism while trying to be like "I'm not racist" hilarious. Just outing themselves at being stupid enough to believe this administration that lies 24/7 while demanding to never be fact checked and never being able to keep a story straight. I’ve recently noticed a spike in anti-Somali sentiment on TikTok and other forms of media. Quite aware anti-Somali sentiment has been prevalent for quite some time. However, the sentiment has always seemed on the low end and not a number one issue. Now it seems to have become a top issue that is preoccupying tons of people’s minds like Trump’s right now. Any particular reason why anti-Somali sentiment is being intensified right now?

1 week ago - Almost all fraud in welfare programs comes from providers billing for services they did not actually provide, as opposed to poor people misusing benefits or gaining access to benefits they are not actually entitled to. EDIT: Also specific to this being called a "Somali daycare scam" the current President has clearly and publicly expressed animus against Somali people.

Answer: a fairly old story being dug up for political use. There's been misuse of federal funds starting during the pandemic under the Trump admin that was investigated and prosecuted under the Biden admin during Walz term as governor of Minnesota. A large number of people involved were Somali Americans, though the ringleader was white. More recently, Youtuber Nick Shirley posted a video expose where he visited several Somali American-owned daycares and claimed to find evidence suggesting they are fraudulent. There's been pushback against Shirley's claims , noting his history as a right-wing content creator, clocks/watches in his video showing him visiting daycares outside of business hours, and state inspectors being unable to reproduce his findings. Daycare operators interviewed also stated he had a large camera crew, despite claims to be a parent seeking childcare, and they did not allow them access to children for obvious reasons. Nonetheless, Shirley's video has been signal boosted by JD Vance, Kash Patel, and other heads of the federal government, culminating in the Trump admin freezing childcare funding to all states.

It is embarassing because in the uk somalis are known to take benefits and they dont feel embarassed. They seem to think it comes from god and not from the hard work of the tax payer citizens ? It has gotten better lately and I do see way more somalis working but its still bad. Even in Somalia itself the craftsmen (madhiban people) are despised even though theyre needed. Why are somalis so backwards !?!?

Wallahi I believe only educated diaspora Somalia can revive Somalia and help remove tribalism and bring in the correct interpretation of Islam and build our country. It’s time to stop hoping for things and actually take action. I would like to create a discussion rather it be a weekly zoom or group. Let me know what your opinion is. Inshallah Somali will be revived and we will leave this dark age by the will of Allah.

I’m an Oxford DPhil, so I would fit the ‘educated diaspora’ criteria. And still, there’s a certain arrogance (and one might say ignorance) in this viewpoint. How can people who do not live in a place, have not experienced a place (and what a range of experiences we have missed out on), and lack the necessary knowledge of the place in consequence, ‘fix’ said place and it’s major historical problems? How many of us can even speak the Somali language with a native fluency? I know for a fact many of us struggle to think and fully express ourselves in Somali, even if we technically speak and understand the language. And with this we’ll fix a country torn apart by civil war and tribalism? Have you ever thought that locals might be sceptical of what they would deem to be foreigners even if we’re still Somali. The jokes against diaspora who go back home by locals are light-hearted and brotherly, but they underlie the fact they see us as something else, something foreign. Now imagine telling them we’ll fix their mess, because that is what this suggests, and in that tone. It’s worth adding, there’s already an alarming trend of locals being sceptical of returning diaspora who see Somalia as a cash cow ready for exploitation, while they suffer. It is better to suggest that educated diaspora can help the recovery process. To suggest that we can fix and revive a nation that is [sadly] foreign to us is to be naive. Perhaps this response is considered overly semantical and pedantic, but words have meanings and understanding what they convey and what they can imply is key, all the more when we talk of fixing a nation. Nonetheless, I do appreciate the enthusiasm to ‘fix’ Somalia and network with other educated Somalis, it correlates well with this post from myself a few weeks ago now (I made the point about not having the ‘fix Somalia’ attitude in its penultimate paragraph! https://www.reddit.com/r/Somalia/s/nSUMVBZ82v )

Unpopular opinion: diaspora should stay out of the government and government officials should only have a somali passport. Diaspora should focus on economically developing the country by bringing the capital and the knowledge from their host country to somalia. Somalia needs educated diaspora to dig up petroleum, build dams, build factories, bring new inventions to somalia and wacyigalin (preaching) the locals on how qabyaalad is holding us back, not joining the politics of a country you can leave in 5 seconds if things go south.

Some things I want to clarify: This is used with ChatGPT, but they're all my ideas. I used it to polish things up. I think the endgame for Somalia isn't Somaliweyne, but for reer galbeed and reer Kenya to continue being apart of those nations. The British did fuck us over, but they've also given us a chance. We have the opportunity of a lifetime. I don't want to say too much here, but ethnicity > "nation." Give them ID's and access to Somali citizenship, but only if they can verify their lineage. We don't want any intruders. I think we should give halfies born before state stabilization Somali citizenship. The Somali identity has crashed, it's not their fault their mother chose to marry out. It's honestly tragic. Us Somali men have to be better. Plus, halfies are very loving of their mothers side (most of the time) and a lot of them only fit in with us. Our friends in the long term will be Arab world and Turkey. It pains me to say this, as I am very untrusting of these people. They're ruthless, merciless, relentless people, but better the devil you know. Ethiopia will always be our enemy, as much as I hate to say it. Whether an Ethiopian is Muslim, Jewish or Christian, or whether an Ethiopian is Oromo, Habesha, Afar, it doesn't matter. We're just too different. Africa has massive potential. The faster Africa develops, the more I want us to lessen economic ties with people outside of Africa.

Lmao. Update step 1 1-20 years: secure monopoly on violence and establish basic security. If we can get that in 20 years, everything else will be easier. The governmental structure, as it is now, will 100% be unable to achieve even that in the next 50 years. Diaspora needs a basic history and cultural lesson about our people back home.

That number is based off of the number of daycares that list Somali as an official language. However, if you look at this list, most of them do not list an official language (similar to how many of them don't have a home address) but very clearly have almost identical names to daycare centers that do have Somali as an official language, usually just someone's name.

Check out the list here, this is within 10 miles of Burien, one of the larger population centers of the Somali community: day care list.

Of the first 50 I looked through of the 1,000+ entries, 49 of them appear to be Somali owned but only 17 of them list Somali as the official language. Just look at the list yourself.

Hi. So I'm a westerner with no real concept of the third world. I came across a recent statistic that showed that Somalia has a 20%+ unemployment rate. Yet the life expectancy is 56 years old. I'm curious how Somalians can live so long with such a high unemployment rate. How do most people make their living then? Do jobs even exist? What do people do to feed themselves and afford rent? Sorry for the ignorant questions I'm just very sheltered but curious as to the realities of the third world.

Are most Somalians still happy and content with life? Or are most depressed and suicidal due to grim prospects?

How much of an impact do people think Somali Childcare and Healthcare fraud have impacted WA State?

It is not unfair to say that this particular group’s % of resource consumption FAR outpaces their population demographic.

There is real concern that this fraud has been going on for decades in the Midwest and has now been franchised to other parts of the country. Maxed Campaign funds for local politicians in the SEATAC area originating from fraudulent child care and health centers in Minnesota are a real concern. Then you look at Google listings for Somali-affiliated child care centers in the 518/405/5 interchange area where the street view is an empty lot and the listed phone has been disconnected and people start asking questions….

So how deep do we think this goes? Seattle-Tacoma has the nation’s third largest Somali immigrant population behind MSP and Columbus, OH.

r/AskALiberal on Reddit: Why isn't the left losing their minds over $9B+ stolen from Minnesota social programs
2 weeks ago -

I'm trying to understand the liberal perspective on this without any gotchas...

The Minnesota fraud scandals have been huge news lately: federal prosecutors estimate potentially $9B+ stolen from 14 state-run programs since 2018 (half or more of the $18B disbursed), including child nutrition (Feeding Our Future), child care assistance (CCAP with "ghost" centers), autism services, and housing programs. Dozens of centers billed for non-existent services, with funds allegedly going to luxury cars, homes, overseas properties, etc.Examples that stand out: "Quality Learing Center" (sign misspells "learning", are you kidding) in Minneapolis: millions in subsidies despite 95+ violations, empty during visits, blacked-out. Fruad. actual, measureable, fruad.

Nationally, improper payments/fraud in federal programs hit $162B in FY2024, with child care and welfare vulnerabilities in states like Illinois, California, etc.—not just Minnesota.

Critics (across parties) blame weak oversight, self-reporting loopholes, and pandemic waivers. Gov. Walz has implemented fixes (e.g., fraud unit, payment stops), and there's bipartisan pushback now.

But why doesn't this level of direct taxpayer theft (billions vanishing while programs meant for vulnerable kids/families get exploited) spark the same intense outrage/protests on the left as, say, corporate subsidies, billionaire loopholes, or environmental issues?

Is it seen as isolated/systemic but fixable without slashing programs?

Or more a failure of administration than the programs themselves?

Do liberals view this as worth aggressive reforms (tighter verification, cuts to risky providers) to protect social safety nets? Or is the bigger priority preserving access for those who need it, even with some waste? Thanks for thoughtful responses!

Update: I also just read that after this dude was found guilty, the judge overturned the results. Come on?!?
