r/sonos on Reddit: What's the advantage of getting a Sonos soundbar?
January 19, 2025 -

So to preface, I know nothing about the sonos system, I only started considering this when I was thinking of wanting some far-away (not next to my bed) alarm system to actually get me out of bed (very long story, just trust that I've tried other options) and someone suggested sonos for this (though I'm not sure how it would work).

And costco has it for $250 off right now, for a final price of $650, so I thought I might just go ahead and buy it and worst case return it if I can't find the value of it within their 90 day return policy.

But $650 is quite the alarm clock...I know the soundbar is often paired with TV systems. But I have a Samsung Neo QLED tv and I'm quite happy with the sound from there. When I look up "what's so great about sonos" the answers are pretty much "it's the best"...does that mean this is something like once you switch to it, you'll never want to go back?

Basically, while the primary reason for my interest in sonos was from the alarm system suggestion, I'm obviously not going to drop $650 just for an alarm clock. I'm trying to figure out how else this would improve my life somehow.

I'm also not tech-savvy at all. I've heard some rumblings of some kind of major screw up with the app and the CEO getting fired over it...can someone briefly ELI5 what that's all about and if that impacts whether it's worth getting a sonos now? Would it impact my alarm system plans?

The main reason to use a Sonos soundbar over any other soundbar is if you have other Sonos speakers, you can link them together to play music even while your TV is off. If you’re not interested in multi-room audio, don’t bother. Any sound bar will be better than built-in TV speakers.

As far as these things can be measured objectively, the audio quality from a Sonos soundbar will be dramatically better than the sound from your TV. This isn't unique to Sonos; most external audio systems will sound much better than the TV's own speakers. Even the best TV's have pretty awful sound quality because of their form factor. You just can't fit good speakers into the frame of a modern TV. When I look up "what's so great about sonos" the answers are pretty much "it's the best"...does that mean this is something like once you switch to it, you'll never want to go back? The value of audio quality is highly subjective, and many people can hear that it sounds better but also not appreciate it enough to justify the expense. You'll probably need to try the soundbar to judge whether or not the improvement is worth it to you. Some people will try their first decent sound system and hear the dramatic improvement over their TV's speakers and never be able to go back. Others will just shrug it off. When I look up "what's so great about sonos" the answers are pretty much "it's the best"...does that mean this is something like once you switch to it, you'll never want to go back? Sonos has good audio quality, but they aren't necessarily best in class. It's a competitive space. What Sonos has traditionally been considered the best at is combining comparitively very good audio quality with an excellent multi-room audio system. For a very long time they were basically the only multi-room audio system. I'm trying to figure out how else this would improve my life somehow. Sonos' main differentiator is that their soundbars and speakers can form a multi-room audio system where you can play audio throughout a home, in individual rooms or in groups of rooms. You can even have different audio playing in different groups of rooms at the same time. The Sonos app lets you control what's playing in each room, from your own music library or from most of the streaming services, control the volume, and group and ungroup rooms at will. I'm also not tech-savvy at all. I've heard some rumblings of some kind of major screw up with the app and the CEO getting fired over it...can someone briefly ELI5 what that's all about and if that impacts whether it's worth getting a sonos now? In May of last year Sonos rebuilt their app from scratch and released it before it was ready. The new version of the app was missing many features from the previous app (including alarms, but they're back now), but more significantly it was extremely buggy. Many users were not able to use their multi-room systems at all. It's been 8 months now and things are better, but many users are still experiencing issues. The damage to Sonos' bottom line has been enormous, and their reputation is in tatters. There are still circumstances where Sonos is worth considering, because a lot of the way their multi-room system works is still unique, and there isn't much else like it with the same range of speakers. If you're just looking at getting a single soundbar, so you're not necessarily interested in multi-room, and TV usage isn't even your main use case? I think there are probably better options. You may have trouble finding better audio quality at that discounted price though, but then we're back to how much you value audio quality. Would it impact my alarm system plans? Alarms are one area where I still see a lot of complaints. Frankly I would not rely on a Sonos alarm for anything important.
