Last week my wife and I walked into our local appliance store intending to purchase the Speed Queen TC5 after reading about the whole 2018 TR5 meltdown online. The sales rep first asked us why types of clothes we intended on washing. We typically wear lighter clothing and jeans that don't typically get very dirty. I can get very sweaty in the summer, though. Anyway, after telling him this he immediately said that we would be better suited for the TR5 because it would be more gentle on our clothes. He said the TC5 is really only for people who have super dirty clothes and that most people are better suited for the TR5. He said the TC5 is too tough on delicate clothes and they won't last as long. He told us the TR5 had some issues with the software in 2018 when they came out but those issues have since been fixed and it's now a solid unit. He owns the SQ front loading version and loves it. He also told us he does not work on commission.
So now I'm stuck. The online opinions of the TR5 are polarizing. It would seem most people love them but then there are the "enlightened few" who say the TR5 is garbage and the TC5 is the best washer you can buy because it has the independent agitator and why buy a washer that lasts forever but doesn't actually do a good job at washing, etc.
This is a big purchase and I obviously don't want to buy garbage. Those of you who own the TC5, is it too harsh on delicate clothes? Is the TR5 a good washer or am I being hornswoggled?
My aunt owns a TC5 and I’ve tried a TR5. I like both. The TR5 was a model made BEFORE the revision, but still managed to take out a decent mud stain.
That said, I still personally think the TC5 has the edge in performance, and I personally like the tried and true design. The wash system is old school tech that is known to last, and last, and last.
As for gentleness my 2016 Speed Queen (which has the same wash system as the TC5) hasn’t ripped up or stretched a single article of clothing.
When needed, the delicate cycle is extremely gentle, doing increments of washing for 1 minute and soaking for 3.
I have a TC5. I like the classic agitator style and it does a great job of cleaning my clothes. They aren't super dirty and I don't wash a bunch of real expensive dress clothes so I can't comment on that fact. I wear scrubs to work and I have no problems of them being beat up or anything like that with the classic. I know my mom has had a Speed Queen classic for years, so when I saw they were having the 10 year warranty if bought before the end of last year, I jumped on it. I saw the reviews as well and decided on the classic since my mom has had one for years and plus a video I watched on YouTube. It didn't take long for me to decide on the classic.
