Square POS for Retail
Square is easy, integrates with everything, and has great reporting tools, but it's insanely expensive if you're doing a large amount of revenue. I've got it and I'm running about 3% on a million bucks in sales, so I've got a call scheduled with a Square account manager next week. They're cutting my fees or I'm hauling ass. More on reddit.com

Anyone have the physical square hardware? Trying to understand install

You mean just the card reader or like the full touch screen POS system? I just have the card reader for my craft fair stuff but it was very easy to set up and get money moving. I have only had one or two problems (most of the time it's just because I need an update lol)

POS alternatives to Square?
I actually work in the card processing industry. Square was going upside down on their fees not charging an authorization fee and was pretty much paying coffee shops to do their processing for them. Behind the scenes, the card networks and banks charge anywhere from 10-22 cents a swipe, plus a percentage, depending on card type and other factors. So Square was just trying to stop losing so much money on small ticket businesses like coffee shops. You honestly still can’t do too much better than their current 2.6% and 10 cents flat, even if you switch and negotiate the cheapest wholesale/Interchange pricing deal possible, unless your average transaction size is $8 or more. Even then, the difference is negligible until you start approaching $12-15, based on my experience. The Durbin Amendment that changed the pricing for regulated debit cards back in 2011 was a phenomenal deal for Target/Walmart (among others who pushed for it heavily) but it killed small ticket businesses like coffee and fast food. With that said, Revel, Toast, Cake and Clover are all going to be good options for a coffee shop. Toast and Cake do their card processing in-house and it won’t be any cheaper than Square and all of those options will charge higher monthly device/cloud fees than Square does at the base level. Revel gives you a few options on the card processing, and they have a good product. And your experience and pricing with Clover, while a decent product for quick-service restaurants/bars, will vary wildly depending on who you buy it through and what price you negotiate. With Clover it really matters who you get it from. Hope that helps. But the long and short of it is, there isn’t any money to be saved by switching for your industry type. Unless you want to surcharge customers (which there are rules to that which pretty much everyone that’s doing it breaks) but that can be a major turnoff to customers. Square was just giving coffee shops a sweetheart deal for years by not charging an authorization fee. A compromise might honestly just be raising item prices by 5-10 cents or so. I’m surprised more coffee shops haven’t all raised prices already. More on reddit.com

People also ask

Is PayPal or Square cheaper?
There's quite a lot that goes into answering this question. The fees for swipe, chip, and contactless transactions are similar (Square charges 2.6% + 15¢, while PayPal charges 2.29% + 9¢). However, PayPal charges extra for non-US cards, charges you the original transaction fee for refunds, and charges $20 for chargebacks. All told, Square might just come out a little bit cheaper. Plus, Square's POS platform is stronger than PayPal Here.

Square POS Pricing 2026: True Plan Costs & Hidden Charges
What is the maximum amount you can charge on Square?
$50,000. All Square accounts have the same maximum charge. Though, to be fair, as the system is aimed at SMBs, we doubt any of Square's users will be meriting charges higher than that.

Looking for any advice on a solution for our band's merch table - we currently use the basic square reader linked to whatever device the person running the table has handy, but it often involves a lot of inconvenient pairing and re-pairing the reader or whoever has the paired phone having to run back to the table if an unexpected sale comes up at some point during the night.

Ideally we're after a very cheap and small android based device (7in tablet or smaller) capable of running square that we can just leave in the merch box along with the reader and just charge both up before a gig. We've looked at old phones and devices that we have kicking around but unfortunately they are all too old and out of date to run square or are not compatible.

We've also looked at the square terminal as a possible solution but it's too pricey, we don't need receipt functionality and it's unfortunately much more attractive to thieves as the merch table is often unmanned.

Any suggestions for a device or solution that won't break the bank and will not be a major issue should it get stolen would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: We already use the Square POS tile reader to take payments and don't intend to change for the foreseeable future, it's the device that runs the android app that we need cheap and cheerful model recommendations for.

October 1, 2022 -

Anyone here use Square as their point-of-sale system? I'm taking ownership of my family business and the system in place is very outdated. I'm looking for an upgrade that will allow staff to interface with customers and handle certain types of transactions from any location in our retail facility. I'd like to provide each employee with a tablet that allows them to process payments, track and manage inventory, etc.

This seems to be an option with no upfront costs, which I find too good to be true. Where do the hidden costs come in? How much am I going to get from this "free" service before I start getting hit with fees? I've been looking into a bunch of POS systems and am not interested in a full head to toe revamp at this time, which is what a lot of POS companies try to sell, and the cost is astronomical. Maybe worth it down the line, but for now, I just want a simpler solution that will meet my basic needs.

I read some reviews that Square may not be the best platform for handling large volumes of sales/transactions - can anyone validate this? Would it be recommended to use the square debit card/checking account that is offered, or link my already existing business/checking account?

Looking for low-cost efficiency with my main priority being inventory management - which is something that the business does not have a good handle on right now. If there is another system that anyone could recommend instead of Square, I am all ears!
