What is the purpose of subtlety? Why be subtle?
I really like subtlety in the context of humor. Making a joke suble, instead of out in the open, gives it more.... I don't know how to say it.... "flavor." It makes the audience have to work for their humor- they value it more when they aren't just handed an obvious punchline with a laugh track, but instead have to synthesize the ideas presented by a joke before realizing their humorous implication. What does it mean to write with subtlety?
Without context, it could mean a lot of different things. But I would interpret it as having been that the author never hammers the reader over the head with anything or needs to lead them by the hand to reaching a conclusion. Instead they have skillfully steered the reader's emotions/interpretations in a direction without any feeling of intrusion. More on reddit.com
