Hey, everyone!
So, my iPhone 14 Pro Max screen just completely died on me out of nowhere (Apple couldn’t figure out why). I was originally thinking of grabbing the 16e and then trading it in for the iPhone 17 lineup, but the Apple Store employee convinced me to pay $400 to replace the screen. The reason: he said I could probably trade it in for $500+ later, and that T-Mobile often gives better trade-in values than Apple.
Now, here’s my question:
I’ve never traded a phone in through my carrier before because I always thought it needed to be tied to a new plan (and I’m grandfathered into my current one). Is that not the case anymore? Does T-Mobile really offer better trade-in deals just because?

T-mobile only offers a better trade in if you are on the most expensive plan, or maybe the second most expensive plan. IF you are on a grandfathered plan then you might get 300 dollars for trade in. Example, you could trade in an samsung galaxy s10 for 800~ on the most expensive plan, but for the same phone I think it's like 300 or even less on the grandfathered. YMMV, but if you're on grandfathered, you probably will get better value trading in with apple, or at least very similar. Edit: Also another perk on the most expensive plan is that they take any condition trade in. This is slightly more relevant for you since the screen is broken. They would take your broken phone for full listed trade value as long as they can get an IMEI somehow. Typically this isn't worth changing your plan to, unless you really upgrade every two years. then it starts breaking even, or you coming out slightly ahead.

I bought a ONEPLUS 10 Pro 5G about a year ago for $899.99. I am not really happy with it so I decided to look into trading it in, only to discover that the trade value T-Mobile is offering is $45. This was through both the site, or calling in... I have not tried going in store yet.
$899.99 to $45 in a year is terrible
My wife's iPhone12 Pro had a $200-300 trade in (can't get the screen back) which I thought sure... 2 generations back, iPhone... That's what I would expect.
But $45 for a one year old device that TMobile still sells?
WTF?
Has anybody else experienced this? What did you do in your instance?

Androids don’t hold their value well. And the trade ins anywhere are always going to be trash. You have to get a promo that gives you more as bill credits but requires you to finance the device and commit to 2 years. Or sell your device independently, if you want to make a decent amount back on your device.
