...and I responded: "no lo entendí ese libro" and marked as incorrect.
the given correct response was " Yo no comprendí ese libro. " and in the forum discussion nobody is suggesting something like my answer... So, is "no lo entendí" completely wrong?

As a native speaker, I would say: "No entendí ese libro". Or, a more informal way: ""No lo entendí a ese libro". The way you wrote it sounds weird.

Obligatory "I don't speak Spanish" (just two other, similar, Romance languages), but looks like 'lo' is a direct object too. That means that 'no lo entendí' means 'I don't understand it', and then 'no lo entendí ese libro' would mean something along the lines of 'I don't understand it this book', which is clearly weird because you've got two direct objects.

The way you wrote it would be using Spanish as an adjective. So it could be any book that happened to come from Spain. I think Duo was looking for a book about Spanish, like a Spanish textbook. So you would need "un libro de español"

A Spanish book = Un libro español (a book printed or written in Spain or Spanish authors). A book in Spanish = Un libro en castellano (a book written in the Spanish language). A book of Spanish = Un libro de castellano (a textbook about the Spanish language) Your answer shouldn't be correct, but I think it's Duolingos fault by using reductive English that confuses anything Spanish, by using the object Saxon genitive, which induces to confusion.
