The jacket is described as water repellent by The North Face meaning it should keep you dry in all but the heaviest of downpours. It isn't waterproof though if you're out in the rain for a long time, it will eventually seep through.

It can be washed in the washing machine but you should use the delicate cycle and a special down detergent. The number of revolutions should be as low as possible, and rinse cycles will also help to get rid of excess water. Afterwards, you should not simply pull the jacket out of the machine, but carefully scoop it out from underneath.
