I’m still a newbie, but I just finished a similar project and might be able to offer a few ideas to help you decide. I went with construction grade lumber from Home Depot, and despite rummaging through their racks of wood for the straightest, cleanest 1x6s, a lot of the lumber I brought home warped and twisted by the time I was ready to start on the project. The pieces also had really bad edges, and I spent as much time prepping the wood as I did measuring, cutting and assembling. I may end up just painting the damn thing. About a week into the project I wished I had bought some nice plywood to work with. I made my kitchen counter out of solid core birch plywood and it was lovely to work with. This is all to say, unless I get a better shop or a better supply of lumber, my next project will be plywood. More on reddit.com

I'll be adding veneered walnut floating shelves above the right side of the cabinet in a few weeks. This was my first cabinet project so I kept the design relatively simple. Cabinet is made with Baltic birch, trim is 1/8" walnut, countertop is 1x walnut, other exterior surfaces are walnut veneer. Cost breakdown: Plywood: $500 Walnut: $200 Veneer (including contact cement): $200 TV lift: $300 Hardware: $220 (mostly the slides, 15 damn drawers) Finish: $50 (osmo polyx) Floating shelves to come will be around $200 total. Learnings: Glue balloons wood (oops, the dados don't fit! get the hammer!) Veneering large surfaces is nerve racking but isn't too tough Accounting for the true width of plywood requires more careful math than I realized Matching board grain is a thing ( front board on the countertop is off versus the other two - I think it looks fine but in the future I'll remember to consider it) Egregious mistakes can be fixed with egregious solutions if no one's going so see it More on reddit.com
