Partly because it’s two large cities of similar size (Twins) if you add Minneapolis and St Paul, you’re at 728k which is comparable to San Francisco, Seattle, Denver. And there are plenty of other Metro areas where the biggest city makes up a small fraction. San Francisco is 800k out of 4.6 million metro area. City of Detroit accounts for about 600k in its metro area of 4.4 million. DC has 670k in its metro area of 6.4 million. More on reddit.com
