I'm considering moving to South Carolina to retire and I just found out that your state has a annual yearly property tax. Can someone explain to me how to calculate the yearly cost? I read that it's 6% of the vehicles value, but is there a cap?
As an example if I have a newer car that I'm bringing in from out of state when I move there, and the car cost me $100k, does that mean I have to pay 6% of the 100k which is $6k a year in taxes? That sounds incredibly high.

You pay tax to the county you are in, there is also a flat one time $250 IMF fee when bringing a car into SC. Initially registering a car here can be kind of expensive, when I moved here my 2018 Volt was worth about $25k and I think I paid roughly $750 altogether to get it titled/tagged/registered/taxes paid in Spartanburg county. Some counties have much lower rates than others, all depends. The good news is that there is a sales tax cap of $500 on vehicle purchases, so if you buy a $50k vehicle, you'd only owe the state of SC $500, and then you'd pay property tax to the county you live in to be able to register it.

February 25, 2024 - Unfortunately, some state tax motor vehicles. 23 don't. SC has one of the highest rates. Note: All US Territories also have a similar tax, So PR, VI, AS, and Guam. I'm not sure about their effective rates. Also of note, in SC, the tax is unrestricted General Fund. So, there are no specific use designations. It can and does pay for anything and is not specific to pay for roads. Lastly, some people think that property tax in SC stays in the counties since they collect it.
