Hi, I’m reaching out because I’ve come across what I believe to be a serious case of public deception involving a high-profile figure.
I’m not a journalist or a PR professional. I’m a private citizen who recently accessed official documents that raise strong suspicions of tax avoidance schemes and financial misconduct. These documents suggest the systematic funneling of funds through a company that reports minimal net assets.
I’ve compiled PDFs, public records, and other supporting materials. I’ve tried contacting several media outlets, but after weeks without a response, I’m unsure whether my message was overlooked or simply not compelling enough.
I’m not looking for attention—just guidance. I don’t have contacts in journalism, and I’m hesitant to publish this on my own. I believe this story deserves proper investigation, but I need help figuring out the next step.
If you’re a journalist, editor, or someone with experience in investigative reporting, I’d be grateful for any advice or direction.

The trick is to know we get a hundred emails a day pitching stories, and at least one or two a week that sound like this but are actually just conspiracy theories or people who don’t know how stuff works and see corruption where there is none. Or, also often, someone with an axe to grind. So to get my attention you need to show me that you’re none of those, and that you have a real story. So if you email, don’t be hyperbolic and don’t necessarily tell me the conclusions. Be specific. Name the person and describe exactly what has you suspicious. Don’t necessarily attach ALL the evidence but do let me know you have something concrete to share. And then call to follow up! Just once. Don’t be a pest. But there’s no harm in “hey just wanted to make sure you got my email.” Happy to help more specifically if you want to DM.

Knowing the country or city you're in would be helpful. In case you don't want to, you can find journalists at your local prominent outlet. These are often referred to as the "paper of record" for your area. Look for reporters who have written about local politicians and their tax issues. Someone will likely have done that already, depending on where you are. There's a good chance this reporter will also use an encrypted app and will have their username be public for anonymous tips. This is how you do this. Others are free to correct me.
