What’s the best way to water proof this shower/bath? Going to tile it with some kind of tile. Heard of using cement board with vapor layer . Do I replace the remaining dry wall at the top?

DIY Guide to Waterproofing Your Walk-In Shower - DIYTyler
April 5, 2023 - For the mixing valve and showerhead pipe holes, I added a layer of mud around the hole-shaped openings. After smoothing that coat out, I applied the seal for the mixing valve. Make sure the thick side is facing the mixing valve inside the wall! After installing these seals, I added a coat of mud as needed to the outside layer. Now that I had waterproofed every part of the shower except the curb, I next turned to the bench.

What is proper shower water proofing?
The green board is mildew/mold resistant, it's not waterproof. Should have minimum put the redgard on everything. Personally, I always do cement board followed by redgard for shower and bath tiling More on reddit.com

How to water proof walls around shower/tub
Cement backer board gives rigidity so the tiles and grout won't crack. I can't see a picture, you can upload to imgur, but you don't always have to cement board to the top, unless you are doing a steam shower which would need ceiling vapor barrier. As long as you have good ventilation and a door with a gap at the top, then you shouldn't need to go all the way up. Steps are: Level walls, use 4ft level across and in a X pattern to ensure they are plumb. Taking time here will save you many headaches down the line. cement board on walls (Kerdi boards are an expensive light weight option) fiber tape and mortar joints paint on red guard or similar waterproofing substance second coat of red guard. then thinset troweled out with tile. finally grout. Might have missed a few steps, but that's the general idea. Literally halfway through tiling my shower last weekend, about to finish it up. More on reddit.com

Bathroom walls are out, insurer claims no need to waterproof the floor?
The Australian Standard 3740-2010 says that the minimum requirement is that shower area floor needs waterproofing with a continuous membrane. This is just the shower area, not the entire room. However, the entire floor needs waterproofing if it’s on a 2nd floor. If the bathroom sits directly on the slab then the entire room doesn’t as per the AS, just the shower recess area. Best practice would be to do it all, but it’s not a requirement under AS 3740-2010 unless it’s a second storey bathroom. More on reddit.com

Does this shower wall need additional water proofing?
Sigh. These comments are all shit. Just use kerdi up to the height of the shower head or a bit higher. You don't need to remove anything. Just have a 2" overlap for your kerdi and it's all good. Kerdi is completely waterproof as long as it's installed properly so the backer for it is irrelevant. Source:Schlueter installer and bathroom renovation contractor. More on reddit.com

February 24, 2025 - Schannon Yodice Tile Installation and Design Expert Expert Interview In addition to the tray itself, you’ll need to lay strips over the cracks where the floor and walls connect. Afterwards, measure and cut a large hole to fit precisely over the drain opening. Finish by applying one last coat of waterproofing over the entire floor. If the membrane you’re using isn’t large enough to cover the floor in one piece, you can trim and overlap multiple sections to get just the right size. For showers with sliding doors, place a strip around the lip of the stall where you enter.[18] X Research source

Install reinforcing membrane where the floor joins the walls and around the drain. Once again, paint the area, then put the membrane down and give it a second coat to flatten it. When your membrane is installed, waterproof the rest of the floor.

August 5, 2021 - Also, you can use the standard seam strips in nonstandard ways: around the edges of niches and curbs, and even around the entire floor—taking advantage of their strength and crack-isolation properties. Foamboard systems can be used for walls, the pan, or both to create a shower substrate. Most systems also offer preformed niche boxes that integrate nicely as well. Between the parts and over the seams goes a liquid-applied elastomeric sealant, creating a fully waterproof substrate with an excellent factory warranty.

September 11, 2022 - There is more than one way to build a waterproof shower but they are all unforgiving in that the tiniest of mistakes means a water leak that becomes mold and rot given some time. If all they did was nail cement board to the studs and slap on the tile my guess, is it will all get redone in less than 5 years. From the photos it looks like the floor may be curb less making it very difficult/ impossible to test the floor pan.

Tiled Shower Waterproofing Systems | Schluter
The Schluter system provides the option of using a preformed shower tray with the slope built in and waterproof membrane applied at the factory. The use of such a tray eliminates the need to build a mortar bed, a process that can be particularly challenging for larger shower floors. The preformed tray makes installation much faster as it eliminates the required drying time for the mortar bed, and it guarantees a uniform slope on the shower floor. ... Most wall assemblies require a vapor retarder, such as roofing felt, reinforced asphalt paper, polyethylene sheeting, etc.

While its individual components are all made to be waterproof on their own, achieving a waterproof shower installation to inhibit water infiltration over the long-term requires the right type of waterproofing membrane. Without a shower floor and shower wall waterproofing membrane, grout joints can gradually absorb water and lead to water damage, putting flooring, drywall, and even wooden wall studs at risk of water damage and mold growth over time.
