This is a corner case I believe, clearly the Xorg.0.log file that inxi is reading to get the loaded/unloaded X driver list is not updating on reboot, which is unusual. Alternately, the log file location that xorg actually updates might be different than the one inxi is trying to read, though inxi d… Answer from h2-1 on forum.garudalinux.org

r/linux_gaming on Reddit: PSA: don't use xf86-video-amdgpu with Wayland
January 7, 2023 -

I had an epiphany this morning

I use Wayland exclusively over xorg, and it turns out installing this xf86-video-amdgpu package on top of the usual Mesa (which provides amdgpu already) conflicted with my game performance. I removed it on Arch with yay -R xf86-video-amdgpu, rebooted, and it is night and day. It even boots faster.

If anyone needs me, I'll be finally gaming on Linux with good performance for the first time in months. See you on the battlefield

You have probably moved on already, but I had a similar problem and for me it was that amdgpu install created a file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-amdgpu.conf which blacklisted the amdgpu kernel module. After commenting out the line in that file (and recreating initramfs ) Wayland worked again

r/linux_gaming on Reddit: Does Switching to an AMD GPU From Nvidia Fix The Issues With Wayland?
February 9, 2024 -

I have been using an Nvidia GPU for a while with Linux, and I have recently switched to wayland to try it out. I did all of the steps of making everything run relatively smoothly with wayland + nvidia but things like electron apps being absolutely unusable and video games (despite having high fps) stuttering non-stop making them virtually unplayable has made me regret my decision.

I want to know if switching to an AMD gpu will solve these problems or is it just a wayland being still a work in progress project thing.

Thanks in advance!

I won't tell you what to do, but I'd personally not switch vendors nor buy new hardware for Linux's sake. It ain't even Linux's fault, Nvidia simply does not play along. But the idea of having to switch vendors just so that your OS runs well is outrageous. Perhaps you were already thinking of upgrading, and considering going with AMD. That's fine, and if you chose to do so, you'll have smoother sailing on Linux. But if you're considering doing this just because Nvidia sucks on Linux, then I think it's a terrible idea. You chose the hardware in your PC for a reason, including your Nvidia GPU. Perhaps you like Nvidia's ecosystem and the features they provide, or just prefer them for whatever reason. Having to forcefully change that just to have your OS work is, once again, simply outrageous. I'd wait. Have to use X11 in the meantime? Do so. Linux youtubers and folk in general keep going on and on about how Wayland is the future and how X11 is obsolete and dead in the water. They aren't wrong, but what the hell does it matter when Wayland won't even work well with the hardware you currently have? Put those folks on mute, grab your trusty X11 window manager, and wait it out. A bit of hopium here, but there are good things coming. Nvidia is at least showing good will towards Wayland, and NVK is progressing at a breakneck pace. With a little bit of luck, those remaining headaches with Nvidia in Wayland will be resolved sooner than later. And fuck it, I'm gonna say it. Just like when Windows 11 artificially locked out older CPUs from working with it; if your OS does not work with the hardware you spent money on, perhaps you don't need new hardware, but rather a different OS. It's unfortunate because Linux isn't actually at fault here unlike Win11, but the point still stands.

July 10, 2021 -

Hello to all

I just performed a clean void linux installation. My setting reads:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kernel: 5.12.14_1, GNOME 40.2,

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700U with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx (8) @ 2.300GHz

GPU: AMD ATI 02:00.0 Picasso

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Never the less I have the following problem:

after some time of use, my system freezes and nothing(*) -but hard reset can be done.

Have you met the same problem? I have to mentioned that the same problem happened in plasma (KDE).

Thank you all

(*) not even to open a tty terminal is not possible.

Compatibility of the Radeon driver with Wayland - Desktop - GNOME Discourse
December 19, 2025 - Hello. I have a PC with an AMD-A10, and in several distributions that I have installed, I am having problems with the Wayland session because the kernel automatically assigns the radeon driver to my APU instead of the amdgpu driver. I have attempted to force the use of the amdgpu driver, but sometimes the system does not start and becomes unstable, so I have had to revert to the old radeon driver.

July 12, 2024 -

How is the experience for this? I've tried multiple times to switch to Arch and have run into graphical, showstopper problems everytime. I currently run 2 Nvidia GPUs as I have 6 monitors.

I am looking to build a new machine. I am going to build a Ryzen 9950X when they come out and pair it with an AMD GPU, probably a 7900XT or 7900 XTX. The reason being, that I want to get away from Nvidia drivers. Will I have any issues with KDE plasma on wayland with this config?

r/archlinux on Reddit: How is Wayland on NVIDIA vs AMD these days?
June 5, 2022 -

I was considering getting a new GPU with the recent decrease in GPU prices and I was curious as to whether people had experience regarding Wayland recently. I had heard that NVIDIA improved their driver support regarding the newer cards but I've also generally heard more positive things regarding AMD's GPU support especially over the long run. Last time I had gave Wayland a shot (gtx 960 w/ both proprietary and nouvaeu) my 144hz flickered black about half the time if left at the full refresh rate so I ended up going back to X11.
