The standardisation of plant names is a critical step in various fields of biology, including biodiversity, biogeography, and vegetation research. The WorldFlora R package (Kindt 2020) matches lists of plant names using the static copy of the World Flora Online (WFO) taxonomic backbone available here.

The WFO Taxonomic Backbone will include all effectively published plant names, with every name being assigned a unique WFO identifier, regardless of its taxonomic and nomenclatural status. A single classification of taxon names and their synonyms is built using the Taxonomic Backbone so that descriptions, images, geographic distributions and other content can be attached. August 18, 2023 - The primary function of the WFO-TB is to provide structure to the hundreds of thousands of descriptions, images and other pieces of Content that make up the WFO’s main web portal, but periodic snapshots of the taxonomic data are also made available as public downloads and published as the WFO Plant List.

The TAXONOMIC BACKBONE - is a comprehensive global consensus taxonomic hierarchy of accepted names and synonyms is fundamental to WFO for organizing the descriptions and images of families, genera and species. The Plant List v1.1 (2013) was the starting point for the Taxonomic Backbone for the WFO portal.

December 15, 2021 - Many thousands of new names and nomenclatural corrections accumulated over the last decade have been added to WFO from the International Plant Name Index (IPNI, ipni.org), and significant updates to the consensus classification have been made using data supplied by WFO TENs and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (wcvp.science.kew.org). The WFO Plant List will be updated at least annually with downloads from the WFO Taxonomic Backbone, and provides an interactive, citable list of the world's plants, with archived versions, and data downloads at different taxonomic ranks.

TENS, or Taxonomic Expert Networks, help improve the WFO taxonomic backbone and curate a global consensus classification.
