I got into the program with an AAS in enterprise software programming. Landed my first job a little more than half a year before starting the program. Which afforded me the benefit of seeing what’s realistic or practical vs filler material. The SQL courses and most anything requiring code are quite helpful and teach important basics. However, the program drastically lacks teaching students the fundamental computer science topics that explain the how’s and whys behind software development. You can make up for this on your own, but it would be a lot better to include them in the program instead of the generic help desk IT courses they use for filler. There’s a whole semester worth of generic IT fluff the program could really do without imo. Not because it’s bad to know, but it’s irrelevant to software development and takes away from your skill set instead of add to it. If you want a development degree that’ll prepare you for help desk technician and IT support work then this is fantastic. If you want to be a developer then prepare to do a lot of external studying as well. You’ll be able to get by, but interviews that ask about algorithms and have silly coding challenges will have gotchas that might trip you up as that material is only covered in WGU’s computer science degree. The program isn’t bad, and should be able to help you get a job. I just dislike how much it focuses on general IT instead of development. Hope this helps!
