To what extent is Cuba a Caribbean country?
There are lots of Caribbean countries that speak Spanish and even French. Also Cuba's population is only 65% white. It is located in the Caribbean Sea like most other Caribbean countries. I'm not sure how one would define Latin American culture because Chile is very different culturally from Mexico or Honduras, and many other examples. I'm not sure why one would say that Cuba isn't Caribbean. More on reddit.com

Is Cuba really bad?
I'm Cuban-Belgian, don't have Cuban passport, but I do have a lot of family there, and since my dad was born and raised there, I also speak Spanish. I also went to visit a lot of times, my last time was last September. The experience of visiting Cuba really depends on what kind of trip it'll be (mainly: do you stay at hotels, or casas particulares or family). I always felt safe there, even in the capital at night. I would however advise against criticising the government in public or around people you don't know. The main thing to be prepared for if you're not staying at hotels is being confronted with the consequences of the economic crisis: shortages of food, constant apagones (forgot the word in English, but like basically electricity shutdowns), very bad internet connection (so often you won't be able to contact family abroad), and just seeing people struggling to find a will to keep going in a place where no matter how hard you work, life will be a struggle. In some clubs, people may offer drugs (weed also counts as drugs). Say no, always. Drug use is a criminal offence and can land you in jail for years, and you don't know if there is some cop in civilian clothes around. Also, bring some battery/USB charged fans, and powerbanks (preferably multiple) for when the power goes out. Bringing some canned food is also not a bad idea, since because of the apagones it's not always possible to keep fresh food, since refrigerators won't work. You also probably won't find the food you're looking for in shops, because of the food shortages. Also, exchange your money with locals, not at banks or ATMs, since the official currency rate is completely different from the actual value: Officially, 1USD=±26CUP, but in practice 1USD=+210CUP, so if you change 100$ at the bank, they'll give you 2600CUP, which is actually worth only like 12$. In the streets they'll give you 21000CUP which is the "correct" rate. I know it sounds like a lot, and at times it'll also feel like a lot, but if you come prepared, you will have an amazing trip, you might meet the nicest people you have ever seen, and see a lot of what Cuba culturally and historically has to offer. I'd really advice you to go and see for yourself. Good luck! I hope this comment helps! More on reddit.com

CMV: Cuba's poverty is due to its government, not the U.S. embargo.
How many times do we have to go through this? This guy is fucking obsessed with Cuba and keeps posting this same rant and getting debunked. Cuba does not engage in free trade with more than 150 nations. The embargo prevents any ships that dock in Cuba from docking in the US the only exception, which wasn't passed until 2000, is food and medicine for humanitarian purposes. Imagine if there was a law that forbid Fedex, UPS, Amazon, and USPS delivery drivers to drop packages at any other house in your entire city for 6 months if they dropped a package at your house. Would you consider that "free trade"? You think Amazon is going to choose you over thousands or millions of other people? If you feel so strongly that the embargo has no effect why don't you call up your representative and spew this rant at him instead of boring the rest of us. More on reddit.com
