What is the use of this cable?
RS-232 Serial port to RJ11 (maybe RJ12). Lots of possible devices such as a 2-line LCD display, scale, barcode scanner, cash drawer, etc. Pretty common in PoS (Point of Sale) systems. More on reddit.com

What is the serial cable? A serial cable is a data transfer cable that sends data between two devices using the serial communication protocol. The serial port determines the type of connectors to be utilized. The term “null modem cable” refers to a connection that connects two DTEs directly. More on forumautomation.com

They work. They're the 'simplest' form of communication that almost every chip supports. I would bet even your phone has UART pads broken out. More on reddit.com

What cable is usually used on serial ports of cisco routers.
Serial isn’t used much anymore, as the highest bandwidth it’s supports is 45Mbps (DS3). “Frame Relay” was the protocol used by this, but it was historically replaced by ATM (155Mbps OC3), SONET (10Gbps OC-192), and now Ethernet (100Gbps currently). Traditionally these protocols were used because of distance limitations of Ethernet, but now that problem is solved. Most business will simply use an Ethernet connection to attach to the WAN as opposed to a legacy serial connection. More on reddit.com

Serial port - Wikipedia
May 1, 2026 - Before large-scale integration (LSI) made UARTs common, serial ports were commonly used in mainframes and minicomputers, which would have multiple small-scale integrated circuits to implement shift registers, logic gates, counters, and all the other logic needed. As PCs evolved, serial ports were included in the Super I/O chip and then in the chipset. An IBM PC serial card with a 25-pin connector (obsolete 8-bit ISA card) ... July 24, 2003 - Straight-through serial cables are used to connect unlike devices (DTE to DCE). A straight-through cable is just what it sounds like—each pin on one connector connects to the corresponding pin on the other. On a DB25-to-DB25 or DB9-to-DB9 cable, this means that each pin on one connector connects to the same pin number on the other. On a DB9-to-DB25 cable, the wires connect different pin numbers, but the same signal. For ...

RS232 and Serial Communications – TAL Technologies
The serial port on your PC is a full-duplex device meaning that it can send and receive data at the same time. In order to be able to do this, it uses separate lines for transmitting and receiving data. Some types of serial devices support only one-way communications and therefore use only two wires in the cable – the transmit line and the signal ground.

Manufacturers may use RS232 to connect PLCs to devices like HMIs, input and output modules, and motor drives, just to name a few. Keep in mind that RS232 is simply a form of serial communications, or a way to transmit data. A standard DB9 cable is probably the most used cable for this application.
