How do I keep windows as well as install Kali linux on a same laptop?
Making changes to your system BIOS settings or disk setup can cause you to lose data. Always test your data backups before making changes to your PC. Kali Linux on Windows 10 or in a VM?

The VM is still the best option for the majority of the tools. GUI based tools require some modifications and work-arounds to make work. The networking side of WSL still has some major kinks. For WSLv1 there were issues with getting proper responses in tools like Nmap. With WSLv2 being rolled out, it's now a slimmed down VM, but the networking is reduced to NAT only, which again affects routing and responses of the packets sent. If they implement bridge mode in WSLv2 at some point, it might be a good option to re-evaluate.

I do use the WSL with Kali for manipulation of files on my system. Running python, grep, post-processing of packet captures, etc. I haven't run in to many issues with local usage command-line tools.

tl,dr; The tools work better in a true virtualized environment, but WSL has its uses.

I can't make nmap run on the default WSL, so I expect a lot of similar libraries in Kali to misbehave. More on reddit.com

r/Kalilinux on Reddit: What is the best way to run Kali Linux with Windows

What is the best way to run Kali Linux with Windows?

  1. WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux): I can't figure out how to add it to my home network PROPERLY and efficiently

  2. VirtualBox (or VMware): Has problems regarding hardware like using my GPU for hashcat

  3. Dual Boot: I don't know much about it.

What I did (on my laptop) was I installed VirtualBox (VB) on my SECONDARY/internal HDD, & put the VM on there. It took some tweaking to get all that working with the VB being installed on a secondary drive, but I finally got it going good. Then, like you, I was worried, being a VM, that Kali wouldn't use my GPU (GPU 1, which is NVidia) for password cracking & such (instead of using the onboard graphics). This is a little more complicated (for some/so to say), as you have to understand hardware passthrough, and know that it doesn't work 100% like we [people/users] would like. However, with that being said, I WAS able to get VirtualBox + my VM to utilize my GPU 1 within the NVidia Settings Console. Just do some Googling. I tested this out by performing a crack with hashcat within my VM, while monitoring my GPU 1 (NVidia) performance in Windows' Task Manager. Once hashcat was initiated, GPU 1 utilization increased significantly. NOTE: Even tho I have configured VB to use my NVidia graphics instead of the onboard, it still seems like, when running the VM, it's still using the onboard, as when I start up the VM & do some other things on it, my onboard GPU (GPU 0) has more utilization happening than my GPU 1. I had expected that running the VM would keep a constant increase of GPU 1, but that doesn't seem to be the case (at least with the way I have things set up). Hope this helps.
