This is really confounding me. Like, I keep wanting to buy pants that fit exactly like this on me or this but when they actually arrive in the mail, I look exactly like both my dad AND my husband in full middle management The Office glory
Also online pictures can be totally misleading, I've ordered and returned so many - can you believe these two (1 vs. 2) are two photos of the same pants? And somehow I'm never in the first bucket, always the second. It's not that I'm buying the completely wrong size either, the waists are snug.
And at this point, I don't know what the difference is that I should be looking for.
Is it more like a body shape/proportion thing (I am average height, and I guess one thing I've noticed is that the first look is always on like much taller people)? Or is it genuinely a cut difference? Or maybe I'm not looking for the right terms - I've searched like every iteration of high waisted pleated pants I can think of and I just don't know what the right name for the silhouette is.

So it looks like you want something more A-line with a cinched waist, less volume around the hips, and a slight flare at the hem. All of your “reality” examples show trousers that are completely straight or have a slight taper. The length of the pant matters as well. You want the hem to nearly skim the floor so it creates a long unbroken line without pooling.
