I am not a plumber, I'm just doing some test soldering with some scrap pieces. Initially I bought this

To solder onto 1/2" copper and it did not fit, it was the same diameter as the 1/2" pipe. Almost as if it would connect if I were going into a coupler instead (or a 90, T, etc...)
Since I found two of what appear to be the 'same' item (to me) I also bought this (which worked) and that did fit onto the 1/2" copper (cheaper to buy both vs going back).
