1930s Evening Wear: A Glamorous Era of Hollywood-Inspired Fashion – House of Foxy
It is certainly the case for me (and i believe many others) that my fascination with vintage clothing began with 1930s evening-wear. Sublime and dreamy these super feminine styles were designed to flatter the natural figure and were produced in sumptuous fabrics (metallic, velvet, tulle etc), utilised clever cutting techniques like the bias and super tasteful trim and embellishments. Essentially, the 1930s ticks all the boxes where fashion is concerned and has probably never been bettered.

Hello! I would love to have your feedback regarding an evening dress I recently acquired; I'm thinking it's from the later 1930s or (early?) 1940s, but I wanted to get a better idea from those who know more than I do. I am attaching a few pictures and I can post more if needed. It's a beautiful... More on forums.vintagefashionguild.org

Finally properly worn my 1930s evening dress, and for a good occasion!
In the future I am planning on adding a cummerbund to that ensemble, both with a better bowtie. I'll do that once I have enough money for at least a metre of quality silk. In ideal conditions I would use leftover silk to replace original silk on the tux lapels for they are crumbling with every wear and leaking colour More on reddit.com

1930s Inspired Evening Gown
You need to find a copy of Vogue 2241 , which is now out-of-print. Edit:This is a modern reworking of an original '30s pattern, so it's going to fit a modern body better than the original pattern would. Before you do that, have a hard think. Satin is a bitch to sew. Bias-cut fabric is a bitch to sew. The fit of this dress depends on the bias being just right. This is not going to be an ordinary project. It's going to take a lot of hard work and frustration. If you read the reviews I linked to, this style of dress is designed for a relatively rectangular figure. If you're at all curvy, it's going to be more difficult to look good in it. Satin hates you and wants you to be unhappy. edit: If this is the dress you love and want to make, you can often find out-of-print patterns on Etsy and Ebay just by searching the pattern number: "Vogue 2241". Since fabric companies reuse pattern numbers, you'll have to weed out a lot of patterns that aren't relevant. More on reddit.com

1930s(ish) evening wear
Considering all the factors, that’s a pretty good choice! Doing your hair and makeup in a 30’s style will be the clincher. A really fluffy feather boa would be a great accessory too. If there is still a costume rental company in your area, you might be able to rent a high quality one cheaper than buying. More on reddit.com

Cally Blackman, a lecturer on the history of fashion at Central Saint Martins, writes in 100 Years of Fashion, “By the early 1930s, the fashionable silhouette was evolving into a slender, elongated torso with widening shoulders and a neat head with softly waved short hair” (13). Though the lines were simple, the overall effect was one of complete sinuous femininity with a natural waist and skirts flaring out slightly at the ankle, as seen in a fashion illustration from 1935 (Fig. 1). Fig. 1 - McCall's Magazine. Evening Dresses, October 1935.

1930s clothing brings to mind bias cut evening gowns in liquid satins and silks, tweed suits, flounces and frills and topped off by a cute beret or tilt hat. 30s Fashion certainly seemed fussier than the 1920s with its relentless ornaments of bows, trims and frills.

June 25, 2012 - Others here are better and pre and post war markers in fashion. ... Yes I would definetly say 40's as well due to the shoulder draping, skirt details and shoulder pads. I'm not seeing any 30's in this dress, the covered belt is a move towards the 50's as well where alot of dresses get matching covered belts. ... Thank you! The previous owner told me it was from the 1930s, but it just looked like later to me -- which is why I thought maybe it could be from the late 30s (as I thought shoulder pads existed then).

April 5, 2024 - As far as milestones in fashion history go, the backless dress was a new development in the 1930s; never before had women’s bare backs been on such display. Since hemlines returned to the floor, especially for eveningwear, designers had to give the woman a new patch of flesh to flash, and it was her glorious back. Many Vogue articles were dedicated to what, exactly, women were meant to wear beneath these open dresses.
