Dell Computer Blinking 5 White 2 Amber: Expert Solutions
The 5 white and 2 amber LED blink code on Dell indicates a memory (RAM) or motherboard error. First, reseat the RAM modules firmly and test each stick individually. Disconnect the battery and power, then hold the power button for 30 seconds to reset.

Dell Latitude invalid memory installed problem
I would try a hard CMOS reset by putting a flat blade screwdriver on the CMOS pins( battery unplugged) and holding for about 10-15 seconds. Plug CMOS battery back in.Then power reset by holding the power button down for 30 seconds. It is also a possibility that the ram is defective so if you have a way to try known working ram out of another unit that would be ideal. You also could have one bad slot so trying the known working RAM and one slot at a time would be the way to go. Also wouldn't hurt to try another AC adapter in case there is something wrong with the one you are using causing a power surge or over voltage to the motherboard. If all that fails just buy another 7490 on eBay ☺️ More on reddit.com

April 10, 2025 -

I'm getting a 2 amber - 5 white LED flash sequence issue in my Dell Latitude 7490. The issue arose when I was using my laptop then it sudenly froze. I forced power-off by holding the power button then it atarted happening.

I've tried every solution and every combinations of it I could possibly do. What's weird is that I'm still getting the same 2 amber - 5 white pattern even if there isn't anything plugged (no RAM, battery and CMOS disconnected). I should be getting 2-3 pattern according to this Owner's Manual. I want to note that nothing ever gets displayed (no Dell logo).

I want to ask what else could possibly be causing this and how to fix it?

Solutions I've tried:

  • Any possible RAM slot combinations. I've also cleaned up the slots themselves with brush and all.

  • Removed CMOS and battery, tried everything again.

  • Built-in-Self-Test (BIST) works.

  • I have not tried using other RAMs but I think my RAM isn't the problem when I'm getting a 2-5 when i should be getting a 2-3 pattern.

Unusual behaviors;

  • I can't turn the laptop off through the power button. It auto restarts itself. I can only turn it off if I disconnect the battery and not on AC.

  • Auto power on when I connect on AC.

I appreciate all the thoughts and help on this!

If your product is in warranty, you can easily reach out to tech support right here. Just click the Get Help Now button at the bottom right corner of the page. The button is marked with a help icon for easy recognition as per the picture below: Now, if you prefer to troubleshoot your system on your own, please note that a pattern of 2 amber lights and 4 white lights indicates a Memory/RAM failure. Follow these steps to resolve the issue: Shutdown Your Device: Ensure your device is powered off completely. Disconnect Power: Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery (if applicable). Re-seat the Memory Modules: Open the access panel to your device's memory modules. Carefully remove and then re-seat each memory module. Ensure they are properly secured in their slots. Check for Loose Connections: Examine other internal connections, ensuring all components are securely in place. Power On: Reconnect the power adapter and battery, then power on your device. Observe if the issue persists. If reseating the memory doesn't fix the issue, try performing a Hard Reset:  Turn off your computer. Disconnect the power adapter from your computer. Remove the base cover. Disconnect the battery cable. Press and hold the power button for 20-30 seconds to drain the flea power. Install the battery. Install the base cover. Connect the power adapter to your computer. Turn on your computer. Important:  If the pattern of 2 amber and 4 white lights started after a RAM upgrade, it is likely that the RAM is not compatible with the system. Important²: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is possible that the motherboard may be faulty and require replacement. We recommend contacting technical support by clicking Get Help Now in the bottom right corner of the page, or reaching out to a trusted technician for further assistance. December 1, 2024 -

Hello, my Dell Laptitude 7490 is showing two amber lights and one white

search and it is a problem with the cpu. I found some solutions such as removing the battery and the power supply and pressing the power button for 30 seconds.

but it didn't work, Short of replacing the motherboard, that would be the last option.

*Previously I had blue screens for no apparent reason and before stopping turning on it gave some video problems

r/Dell on Reddit: Precision 7550 - Memory Issue - 2 Amber 5 White. Multiple Machines - Different Ram Slot fixed
May 17, 2023 -

So Today I had 2 different 7550s not turn on, both had the 2 amber 5 white error code. So we tried taking the ram out and testing one stick at a time and in different slots underneath and no go.

The fix was to move both ram sticks to under the keyboard and then it boots with no issues.

Its weird that I had two different laptops in two different offices experience this same issue today. Is there any bios updates that pushed out that could have caused this?
