I talked to a guy at the DMV about getting a 1 day TOP for my car with expired tags that needs a smog and has some check engine codes I need to get fixed. He said as long as I have proof of insurance & pay the DMV what I owe, I can get 3 days of operating the vehicle without the actual tags, so I can drive to get it fixed and get it smogged. He also said the 3 days don't have to be consecutive. I forgot to ask for more detail which was dumb, and calling back will be an all day thing. I did Google looking for it and checked the DMV site and don't see what he was talking about. I see a 1 day moving permit which looks like it's for PNO and it's only a single day. And a biennial smog certification TOP. And my tags expired 2021 and from what it says about that, it sounds like I wouldn't quality for the biennial one.
Does anyone know about the 3 day thing he mentioned? He said as long as I have valid insurance and have paid my back tags they'll give it to me. A 1 day permit probably won't end up being enough time to get everything I need done. Also, with the 3 day if they don't have to be consective days how exactly does that work? He said I could do 1 day a week and use the 3 days over 3 weeks if I needed. Since he brought it up and works there I'm assuming he knows what he's talking about. But I can't find anything on DMV's website so I'm wondering what exactly it's called and the details I totally spaced on asking him. He had looked up my car and saw everything on it so he knows the situation and wasn't just giving me general info.
