I was so shocked to hear the the 90s was considered the worst decade for horror that I went on Letterboxd and looked up the top 5 most popular horror films of each decade (1930s-2020s) and found the average rating for all of them. To my findings, the worst decade for horror was the 1940s, which makes sense because I doubt people wanted a lot of horror movies during WWII era. Second worse is actually the 2020s, but we’re only 4 years in so it that might change, and the third worse was the 2000s. This doesn’t prove too much since it’s a small sample size and is only based on the movies most popular on Letterboxd and its ratings (and I’ll admit my math might be slightly wrong since I did it all late at night when tired), but I wanted something to actually prove that the 90s aren’t actually the worst decade. I feel a little silly doing math for something like this but I was curious and I’m glad I was able to show that 90s horror is better than a lot of people think in some way! The 60s, 70s, and 80s were all extremely good decades for horror, so I feel like a part of the 90s horror hate comes from a lot of people viewing it as the “downfall” of horror. I do see that to some extent, as there was way more popular horror movies from the decades prior than in the 90s, but that doesn’t mean that there wasn’t plenty of iconic 90s horror movies too. I’d even say a lot of my favorite horror movies came from the 90s. Some 90s horror that I like that you didn’t mention: Jacob’s Ladder (1990) (Inspired a lot of other horror media, including Silent Hill) Nightbreed (1990) Silence of the Lambs (1991) (Won the Oscars Best Picture for 1991! Some might say it’s more of a thriller, but the horror elements are undeniable) Braindead (1992) Candyman (1992) (Slasher classic!) Ghost Watch (1992) In the Mouth of Madness (1994) Tales from the Hood (1995) The Craft (1996) Perfect Blue (1997) Cube (1997) The Sixth Sense (1999) Audition (1999) There’s even more I could list, but those are some of the best! Sorry for the long comment and if I come off as ramble-y, but I really think the 90s is such an under-appreciated horror decade. More on reddit.com
