r/amexcanada on Reddit: Amex Gold No FX Fee?
September 20, 2025 -

Does Amex Gold have no foreign exchange fee? I am in Europe currently and just paid EUR 18 for a flight. It charged me CAD 29.33 (pending), which is not very off from Google's rate of CAD 29.14. Does it mean that it has no 3% fx fee or will it update the charge once it got posted to my account?

Foreign transaction fees
No matter what card you use, some ATMs or Merchants will give you the option to charge in your currency (eg USD). They usually say upfront that there’s like a 5% fee or if they don’t it might be even worse. You always want to decline this and charge in the local currency. More on reddit.com

All amex cards issued by amex canada have a 2.5% fx fee. Amex cards issued by scotia do not. The 5x multiplier also works worldwide for the most part btw. https://www.rewardscanada.ca/cobaltmultipliers.html More on reddit.com

Why Amex Canada does not have any “no FX fees” card?
Almost all cards in canada don't offer it so no competition or need to offer it. American issuers need to offer to entice ppl to get those cards as there's much more competition More on reddit.com

Foreign transaction fee or Amex transaction fee?

Two different things. Sometimes merchants tack on an extra “tax” for using Amex because it’s more expensive for them to take. It. I believe this is technically a violation of Amex’ TOCs but they do it (doesn’t have to be for international travel; I’ve seen it domestically). Foreign transaction fees are levied by the credit card company and the banks. Two totally different things.

r/amex on Reddit: Foreign transaction fees
March 30, 2024 -

I’m going on a Europe trip to several different countries in a couple months. I was wondering what the international fees on the Amex gold card would be like. It says there are no international fees by Amex but, merchants may charge their own foreign fees.

What’s everyone’s experience with this traveling abroad? Are there any fees either from Amex or merchants, especially in Europe?
