r/mac on Reddit: Why doesn't Apple have USB-C versions of their magic accessories?
December 31, 2023 -

Apple has been transitioning towards using USB-C for charging more and more of its products. However, the Magic Trackpad, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Mouse still use lightning. I initially thought that these products weren't "important" enough to get that upgrade yet, but the Apple TV remote charges with USB-C, so why not the magic accessories?

Using wired keyboard and mouse with a Mac… - Apple Community
If not, what about a Macbook M3 Pro 14"? I don't need advice on this, but I also want to use the Macbook with two external displays. ... Yes for both MBA and MBP.. However, you might need USB-A/USB-C adapter, since most 3rd party wired keyboards/mice are USB-A interface.

Thanks to everyone who has given their time to help me out. I've now tried different adapters and found that the inexpensive iJiGui from Amazon works whichever way-up it is inserted. So here is a full recap of my findings:

  1. Others have suggested elsewhere that it appears to be necessary to enter Settings - Privacy & Security. Scroll down to Security - Allow accessories to connect and select Always. [I did that first. I'm now not sure if it has helped since I've not yet tried restoring it to default.]
  2. Neither of the two types of Syntech USB C to USB OTG (including Cable) Adapters that I was trying (before posting) worked - whichever way-up they were inserted.
  3. I had already in my possession a pack of 3 adapters (unfortunately origin unknown). All of them worked BUT only when inserted one way up!
  4. I've since bought and tried the two pack iJiGui adapter from Amazon and they both work - whichever way-up they are inserted.

Conclusion: There are some simpler adapters (presumably having no active components within them) that will work with the older legacy keyboard. The Syntech adapters (that do have active components within them) are designed to work with later USB 3.1 [I think] standards and speeds. AND There may be also something in-between! SO this connector compatibility issue appears to have become a minefield for the unwary when connecting old to new. As they say: "Your mileage may vary." You may need to study the whole USB connector topic in detail depending on your need.

Hope that helps everyone. Thanks again to the respondents.

SOLUTION! Apple wired keyboard not conne… - Apple Community
Then, while it was still plugged in, I checked system report under hardware > USB and after closing the window and going back in, there it was as 'Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad'. Ok, great. I then unplugged it and re-plugged in my old wired Apple keyboard to see if it would now show up and...THERE IT WAS!

Where are the USB-C Magic Mouse and Keyboard? | MacRumors Forums
March 20, 2024 - It's the same keyboard, only with a USB-C port replacing the Lightning port, I'm not sure why they'd wait for a media event to release such a small change. Although I think they waited until the Wonderlust event last Sept to announce the USB-C charging case for AirPods Pro, so I guess we will have to keep waiting :sigh: ... Apple must have 10 million left-over Lightning ports & chipsets in stock that they have to use up somehow...
