Are ventless fireplaces safe to breathe?
Ventless fireplaces are built with safety in mind, but since they don't have an exhaust system, they release small amounts of combustion gasses such as carbon monoxide and moisture into the room. That's why they include built-in oxygen depletion sensors (ODS), which will automatically shut off the fireplace if oxygen levels get too low. To stay safe, make sure the room has good airflow, avoid running the fireplace for extended periods, and schedule regular maintenance to keep it working properly.

Can you turn a ventless fireplace into a vented one?
No, transforming a ventless fireplace into a vented model is not possible and unsafe. Ventless units are engineered to burn differently, and altering the system could affect combustion and void manufacturer warranties. If you're seeking improved air quality or ventilation, replacing your ventless unit with a vented gas fireplace is the safest and most effective option.

November 21, 2024 -
We bought a fixer upper that had a new ventless Gas fireplace. I hate it and refuse to use it, it makes the whole house smell like gas and I just feel like it's going to suffocate us all. My husband says it's supposed to shut off automatically when there's no fresh air. We are getting into cold season and he turned it on this morning, after a few minutes our kiddo was complaining about the smell and hb turned it off. I just don't know if I can trust this thing not to kill us. Does anyone have any knowledge of these things?

As long as you have a carbon monoxide detector I would not hesitate to use it. As others have mentioned, the smell the first couple of times time you fire it up comes from oil and dust burning off. Incidentally, they're just like using a gas oven in your kitchen. In fact, they're quite a bit safer than a gas oven because they have a catalytic converter that vents the exhaust, whereas your oven does not. (For reference my gas oven is more than 20,000 BTU). Just an FYI, your ventless unit will have its own carbon monoxide safety detector built in. If it registers it will automatically shut the unit off.

Be sure you have CO detectors.
