No, you don't pay for the EC2 nodes if you launch on Fargate in an EKS cluster. The EC2 machines are completely hidden from you and run in AWS's accounts. From a pricing perspective, if you compare Fargate costs with the an EC2 instance with the same CPU/Memory resources, then EC2 is going to be a little bit cheaper. Fargate's model has a couple of advantages: the serverless aspect that you mentioned so no patching/maintenance, but also that with EC2, you're bound to end up not using all of the node's resources fully and end up over-provisioned aka over-paying, especially if your workload is dynamic and pods and nodes are being added all the time. It's not mandatory to attach a public IP to an EC2 instance. You can simply attach an ENI with only a private IP which doesn't cost anything extra to the instance cost. It's typically bad practice to put public IP's directly on instances anyway. Typically you'd put an ELB or CloudFront in front. If you try and scale on 1 public IP per instance than of course costs will linearly increase. NAT Gateway is the easy way to scale, or roll your own NAT instance and then you can reuse it for outbound across many instances. More on reddit.com

hey how much does it cost you for running an ec2 with a moderate number of requests. I have a ec2 with sql server running in docker in a t3 medium instance for a .Net application. I have no request coming as of now but the cost is like 3-4 $ each day. That would be painful for a small businesses. Is there a way to optimize. I did few rate limiting through nginx but cost changes were minimal. And also other aws managed service would be more expensive than manually handling.

Sounds like the vast majority of your cost is the ec2 server itself including the provisioned storage. This should be obvious in cost explorer and detailed billing records. Rate limiting and tuning is gonna do nothing for your cost if this the case. You may have to go to a smaller instance type.
