A sharp increase in the spot cost across multiple regions
Better than it was years ago when people put in 1 for spot bids and spot instances cost MORE than on-demand (t2.large costing $1/hr, lol!) Also, this was asked earlier in the week and it was us-east-1 as well. Maybe stop using us-east-1. AWS is obviously slowing down their overprovisioning / hardware purchases so SPOT availability goes down (and price goes up). More on reddit.com

How Does AWS Spot Instance Pricing Work? - BoltOps Blog
You win an item on eBay, and you pay the second-highest bid that lost. You don’t even have to set a bid. AWS will default the price to the on-demand price in that case. Awesome for you right? With spot instances, AWS can terminate or stop your instance at any time.

Analyzing AWS Spot Instance Pricing Gareth George, Rich Wolski, Chandra Krintz
Amazon uses its data centers to host instances, these dat- acenters do not share infrastructure other than the Simple · Storage Service (S3) [7]. Instead, AWS is organized as “re- gions” each of which operate as an independent service venue. Regions are further subdivided into “availability zones” (AZs), each of which corresponds (roughly) to a single datacenter ... AZ. While on-demand prices are quoted for each region, for · spot instances, each AZ within each region formed a separate

They are all made available through the dynamic pricing model, which enables the price to change based on demand and availability. This implies that the cost will depend on the location of the instance, its type, and the time of day. Whenever you want to work with Spot Instances, you will have to make a Spot request, indicating how much you are willing to pay and what type of instance you would prefer. AWS will only start your instance when it is equal to or less than the current bid.

September 26, 2023 - Typically, when requesting spot instances, you specify the maximum price you’re willing to pay per hour per instance. If your bid exceeds the current spot price, your request is fulfilled, and your instances start running. As the spot price changes based on supply and demand, your instances continue to run as long as your bid exceeds the spot price.
