How do I efficiently back up and restore MySQL databases?

It'd be nice to get a little more info into what exactly you are trying to do.
Backing up data can be as simple as putting a copy of your file into a dropbox folder or Google Drive if you don't have much data that needs backed up. This is a great option for things like school papers, presentations, etc.
If you have more data, you might want to look into buying another hard drive, possibly an external, and using software like Macrium Reflect to run automated backups for you.
If you have fast internet, options like CrashPlan/BackBlaze may be options for you as well.
It really depends on how much data you have, and what you need your fault tolerance and uptime to be. One of the best rules you can follow for backup is the 3-2-1 rule. Anything that you deem as so important it can never be lost should have 3 copies, 2 of them should be in your house stored on different sepereate drives, 1 of them should be elsewhere (cloud, a parents house, bank lockbox, etc) in case of fire, flood, etc.
