Other than the color and LED lights, I'd like to know how these are different from the older ones. I have the older 8" model and just replaced the bearings on it. It's the same HP rating and looks like the same design. IDK how the design of the basic bench grinder could be much different thou. Maybe now they'll have a better selection of 8" wheels. I don't remember how expensive the older 8" was, maybe $59? Anyone remember?

Hey all--

Despite keeping my eyes open, apparently I missed three opportunity to get the well reviewed 8" variable speed Heracles bench grinder as it went on clearance.

Practically the same day it went to clearance, HF released the new 8" Bauer variable speed grinder. The image looks exactly the same. The only major differences I can find are that it costs $10 more and the HP rating is down to 3/4....despite having the same amp draw.

Anyone know if this isIs this just a re-badge? Or is there a substantive difference between the two, especially to justify a $10 increase?

Project Farm tested both and the Hercules came out better. I have my name on the display Hercules at my local store for when they are allowed to sell it. Couldn’t find any left within a couple hundred miles otherwise.

They seem to be using the same pictures for both the old Hercules and the Bauer (with the Bauer photoshopped red, of course). That might tell you something.

I am looking at the Bauer bench grinder with attached LED lamp. It is normally $239, and on sale in my local store for $199. I also have a 15% coupon to use with it, so will be getting it for ~$175 after tax.

I just want some honest reviews from previous owners. Any reason to not go for it? Any safety concerns to be aware of? Any happy/successful metal smiths satisfied with the product? How long is the life expectancy? What is the required occasional maintenance, and the labor/financial costs of the maintenance?

I am looking for something that has medium to long term life expectancy with occasional use and minimal or no maintenance involved. My shop and operations are not that large and mostly consists of tool and knife and jewelry repairs, as well as a small metals refining/recycling operation.

What he said - I've always had best performance from Makita and Norton consumables.

It won't explode and will get the job done but HF disposables (blades, wheels, bits, abrasives, etc.) are fine at first but crap out quick in my experience. Go with Norton if you want something that will last.

Harbor freight has an eight inch, variable speed bench grinder on sale for about $122. I didn’t see a model number but it comes with a light. Would this work with the Wolverine to sharpen a bowl gouge?

It will be perfect. Just set it up per the instructions and go at the slowest speed and you will do fine. I would recommend putting the grinder and the jig on one thick piece of plywood by itself. Then screw that down wherever you like and if you ever need to move it then you can just move that one piece of plywood and everything stays square.
