Do I need a super smooth surface on the table with flatness within about .001"? No. Do I need a slot with a nice tight fit within .001-.002"? No. Did I do it anyway? Hell yeah I did. It's great practice for when I do need to get that precision. Took several hours of hand sanding on that granite tile, some of which were because of the stupid technique I used to try to make it go faster. All the machining was done on a Sherline lathe, with the milling head accessory for the milling. This was my first real machining project unless you count a plastic block I made in college in a subtractive manufacturing class. I made it from bolted together parts to make up the table, reinforced with JB weld so I can't lose the slot precision. The base is welded. On a side note, I poked the granite tile a bunch of times with the CMM at work and got a form error of about .002, so presumably it's flat within .002. Not bad for a tile from the Home Depot. Yes, I could have bought something similar for 50 bucks. Screw that, I can build my own for twice the cost with machinery that costs 20x as much and a bajillion hours of .002" depth cuts with a tiny machine! More on reddit.com

If I had the opportunity to examine this I'd make certain those adjustment screws are not white metal or plastic.. and that's gonna cost a little. Lever, or knob, same deal. Haven't been in this market, but I've had these levers give out at the worst time in the worst way.
