What type of mattress topper is the best?
It depends on your sleep needs. Down mattress toppers are plush and cushy, which is best for those who prefer a soft feel. On the other hand, memory foam and latex are both firmer materials with more support. Latex tends to be cooling, but you can also find special cooling memory foam mattress toppers as well.
Should you buy a new mattress or a mattress topper?
Mattresses should last 8 to 10 years. If you've had an uncomfortable bed for less than that, a mattress topper can reintroduce comfort to your sleep. Mattress toppers are great for softening a bed that's too firm, increasing motion isolation, and, in some instances, introducing cooling features, but if your bed is sagging, lumpy, or no longer supportive, a mattress topper is only a bandaid fix. If your bed is older than 10 years, look for a replacement in our best mattress guide.
What is the best height for a mattress topper?
I am looking for ~6" latex? mattress or mattress topper. I bought my current one in 2002, and now my wife and I are developing backaches. We bought it locally from a local maker, no longer in business. It rests on a hardwood base about 16" high, which in turn is on a conventional cast iron bed frame with slats that will hold a Sherman Tank. When we first bought it, it was advertised as being like "Sleeping on a very comfortable marble slab" and that is a pretty accurate description. We've been very happy with this setup for more than two decades, but now it's time to part ways.
I just bought and have returned a Plank Firm Luxe because I erroneously thought I could sit on the edge of the bed safely to dress, etc. (I'm disabled.) I slid right off so no joy there. Clearly I just need to replace my old latex solution. May I seek the wisdom of the internet as to where I can purchase such an item?
I am 6 foot 370 lbs. and my wife is 5 foot 4" and 120 lbs. FWIW
Hi people!
My mattress is too firm. I want the softest, cloud like, mattress topper that I can melt into that is on the market. I don’t want to have to fluff it. Price isn’t a concern. Please let me know which plush mattress topper you think is the best.
Thank you!
I am going to get a memory foam mattress topper as my mattress. I want something relatively thin because my van is small. I was thinking of getting a 3 or 4 inch one but I'm worried it would be uncomfortable (the topper is going to be the whole mattress, I won't have anything underneath). For people that are using memory foam toppers as mattresses, what thickness would you recommend?
There are two things i want you to avoid when you are buying a mattress topper.
The first thing is not paying attention to density. Memory foam, conventional foam, they're all thermoreactive materials, so with you+your partner+all of your pets, all of that heat and pressure, it's going to make it harder for a lowdensity mattress topper to actually support you and do its job. In fact....it's probably going to look like an old kitchen sponge instead of something that belongs on your bed.
A highdensity mattress topper has enough material to actually combat all of that and support you throughout the night. In fact there's going to be a little bit more air moving through that mattress topper too to help disperse some of the heat, so you'll actually stay a little bit cooler too. But high density, always a good thing.
And the second thing is.....you want to get a mattress topper that is deep enough for you. So you'll look at options that have 2 in, 3 in, or 4 in, something like that. And the way I like to think about it is this: if you're going to go diving, you dont want to do it in the 3ft end of the pool, you want to do it in the 10 or 12T section of the pool. Okay, if you need to get something that allows your body to sink in enough and still support you, especially if you're a bigger guy or gal, you're going to want to look at the 4 in and 3in options. If you're a lot smaller or if it's for a child or college kid, something like that, 2 in might be totally fine for them.
But in any case, my general advice is that if you have enough money to spring for something that gives you a little bit more cushion....in fact, anything in the US that's over 4 in is actually considered a mattress, then a magical little comma appears and you donnt need that. Because most of the comfort comes in the first 3-4" of a mattress anyway, so you can get 80 to 90% of the feeling of a brand new mattress by getting a 3-4" mattress topper.
And here are my recommendations of the top mattress topper in today's market that are worth a look.
