I’ve purchased Target brand Threshold sheets and quilts for over a decade. They last a long time and the 400 thread count sheets feel higher but are still nice and breathable. We purchased a couple different comforters from Macy’s, but had to return both because the quality of poor.

I was hoping to try Amazon, but I don’t trust online reviews anymore and have no frame of reference for quality bedding brands.

I’m looking to spend no more than $100 on a comforter (and no more than $200 on a set if it comes in a set).

I hate my duvet/cover scenario. I want a really wonderful, 1-piece comforter. Machine washable, please. Under $300 for a King would be ideal.

I can run hot but I also love a little weight on me. I’ve been eyeing Quince comforters but will take any recs. Thank you!

EDIT: To clarify — one piece means I don’t want a duvet + insert. Just a comforter… or maybe a quilt since some of those ideas are sounding good.

I know this is not exactly what you’re looking for, but….I recently switched to a quilt, rather than a comforter and I have zero regrets. I got one from Land’s End that is modern, with a velvety texture. It’s a wonderful weight, looks attractive, and can be layered with blankets/sheets to get the perfect temp.

I've been looking on reddit and other places online, and have realized its hard to find exactly what I'm looking for. I want a comforter that is not a duvet insert that I don't need to buy a duvet cover for. Other than that, my main requirements are that it is not warm (I'm a hot sleeper), and is machine washable.

I've been reading recommendations about bamboo, silk, or a lower percentage down comforter but I don't care too much about material as long as its soft and sleeps cool.

Final thing I realized I should include is that my budget is ~$200. Does anyone have recommendations or places I should be looking?

The problem is that about 99% of comforters are polyester-filled (or plastic-based if you want to get technical about it). Comforters and Duvet Inserts are close cousins (and sometimes are the same thing, ngl) so it becomes confusing for many people when they search for comforters and find that an insert is basically labeled as a comforter. Sometimes the 'comforters' will have ties/loops on the ends to help attach it inside of the duvet, and other times it won't. It is pretty frustrating for many people that are looking specifically for just duvet inserts or just comforters (with fill material inside of them). I just basically have taken to calling anything with fill that has no loops/ties a comforter since that's what the majority of them are. It's just the norm: Comforters with a color/pattern on them (that's not just white) tend to be poly-fill 9 times out of 10. Poly-fill, unfortunately, really, really sucks at temp regulation. It usually traps heat, is horrible to dry (plastic doesn't do well expelling water or with high heat b/c it will melt), and will clump over time inside the comforter (especially if you wash it) and then you'll be left with a lumpy mass. I had a comforter from Chic Home that was polyfill and microfiber for years and had no clue what I was getting into with it until I had it for a few months and the deed had been done, so to speak. Ok; here's a question that will make or break this whole dilemma of yours: Do you want your comforter to have a pattern on it (like a detailed colored pattern/image) or do you want just a white comforter (like most inserts look like)? Are you OK with a comforter that is just solid colors (or 2-toned, at the most)? That, more than anything, will determine what direction we can proceed in, because if you want a patterned comforter then the chances of you finding one without poly-fill that will overheat you at night will be very, very slim :( Let me know and I'll do my best to help you find something that will work for you depending on the circumstances.

I recently bought a lyocell comforter called "Buffy Cloud." I think it's terrific. Lyocell is evidently made from eucalyptus, and it's great for those of us who sleep hot. The company also sells an even lighter one called "Buffy Breeze" for folks who live in hot climates. To me, the difference between a comforter and a duvet insert is washability. The Buffy Cloud is machine washable. (Evidently older versions were not.)

I'm tired of changing duvet covers, and I'm tired of having tiny little makeup stains on my all white comforters/duvets ruin them. Looking for something that I can just throw in the washing machine after every stay. Preferably with a pattern to hide the tiny little pen mark or makeup that will inevitably end up on there. I don't mind the extra load of laundry. Ok for 4 seasons that doesn't break the bank would be ideal.

Anybody find anything good that you and your guests both like?

I suppose I'm looking for a good 4 season, durable, washable quilt. Asking here because I trust you Internet strangers more than the review bots on Amazon and I'm assuming you folks are washing these things several times per month to see how they hold up. Much appreciated.

ALL duvet covers should be washed after every guest. Look on Amazon. They have endless variety and prices. You'll have to throw them away after a while. It's the cost of doing business. I prefer duvet covers that have buttons. Zippers always fail pretty quickly.

I've been a "grab a neutral TJ Maxx sheets set" girl for years. I've brought the same sheets and comforters from apartment to apartment and I'm ready to upgrade to something more quality to finally cultivate my dream adult aesthetic. I genuinely have no idea what are good places to buy from. I'm willing to splurge for something that feels cool but is also luxe quality. My personal style is mid century and adding kitschy but thoughtful pieces to it!

I'm trying to avoid patterns and instead go for a single color. I'd like to find something in olive green, a golden warm yellow, or a toasted orange.

I really love the Threshold 400ct sheets at Target (I linked a green set). They’re super soft and have held up well for the last few years AND have tabs on the top and bottom that say “TOP/BOTTOM”, which is probably my fave 🤣 I’m also more of an alternative down comforter and duvet kind of girly, and found it’s easy to just swap duvets to change-up the color scheme. Target’s Opalhouse has had some super cute prints since they launched that brand awhile back.

I was also sleeping hot and made some significant changes to my bed. I love my memory mattress just for the comfort. So, I bought a wool mattress topper, cotton percale sheets, a silk duvet and use either a cotton or cotton/linen duvet cover. We also have a wool duvet that my husband seems to like more than the silk but doesn’t really care. I truly believe that using natural instead of synthetic materials has made a huge difference.

IKEA has duvets for different temperature sleepers. The one I got for hot sleepers is perfect for me.

Hi all,

My fiance and I are looking to upgrade to a king bed and adding things to our registry. Would love some recommendations for the whole bed - from the frame to the linens! I've added ones I've seen highly recommended but would love to hear more opinions:

Cuddle down comforters are amazing. QVC has nice ones from northern nights that are good too and not as expensive. My favorite sheets are by California design den 600 thread count or higher from amazon. They also have covers for comforters.

LL Bean Flannel sheets! I think they have two different qualities. One is a bit higher quality than the other so get the best one, but they’re both great yet knowing the kind of people that come 😀 here definitely YOU the higher quality one! THEY get softer and softer and better and better and better. I live in Maine so I can go to the outlet store 30 to 50% off. THE greatest thing about the L.L. Bean outlet store is this. IT IS not junk that they make for the outlet store. It’s actually real stuff from the regular store they put in there. They win the consumer reports award all the time because the sheets are so amazing. I’ve had ll bean flannel sheets on my bed that I’ve had forever. There’s also two different kinds of cotton sheets, and also recommend the better of the two. I have these on my Airbnb queen bed and people are always raving about the sheets! I also give them to everyone I know as Christmas gifts! PS: I did get a hole in one of them and I took it to the seamstress and had it fixed. L.L. Bean has a one-year return policy, no questions asked. I think they give you a store credit even years later if it’s a flaw in the product.

As far as I understand a good comforter can go a very long way in saving money in heating costs. But what makes for a good comforter? Which one would you buy? How much would you spend?

EDIT: Thanks so much for the ideas! I ended up purchasing the ~$100 Pacific West down comforter from Costco. I also ordered a duvet cover to keep it clean for years. It is very warm and I have been sleeping like a baby!

My own personal opinion is that I would skip the comforter and go straight to heated mattress pad. I primarily heat with wood and my upper story bedrooms can get quite cool, but with the heated mattress pad I can set my backup furnace up there as low as 55º and still sleep plenty cozy.

This might be a bridge too far for many, and certainly not a fashion statement. Worked great for me, though: If you don't mind a nylon surface atop your bedding and have a queen size bed or smaller, you can use a general purpose full-zip sleeping bag as a comforter. Look for the kind that says you can zip two bags together on the packaging. Doubles as a sleeping bag when you need one!

Ideally, I’d like a cotton comforter (not duvets or quilts). And sleep is important to me and we spend a good amount of time sleeping. I don’t really care what the comforter looks like, but I want it to be breathable and lightweight. Comforters can be pricey , but even in checking sales (like Amazon prime going on right now) they’re still very expensive. Please not suggestions for duvets/quilts as i don’t sleep as well in them.

There are going to be people who hate this, but go to the thrift. I’ve gotten my top three favorite quilts from goodwill bins. They were all handmade and would easily have cost me $300 brand new- I paid $5-10 based on the weight. Inspect it fully for rips and big stains- immediately wash in hot water and full heat dry when you get home. If you don’t want to spend an arm and a leg, the trade off is a time investment and potentially getting something that doesn’t fit your needs 100%. That trade off works for me, personally.

IKEA has the best, for the best price. We've had ours for 10-30+ years with no issues. You can choose light, medium or warm. These are the kinds that use duvet covers, though, in case you don't like that kind.
