What is good suction power for a cordless vacuum?
Manufacturers will often boast about their vacuum's suction power in terms of air watts, a figure that quantifies airflow in terms of power use. Generally speaking, more air watts means a more powerful vacuum cleaner but the actual design of the vacuum head plays a significant role too. The tighter a vacuum is against the floor, the greater the suction. If it's too tight against the floor, larger bits of debris won't be able to make it underneath the cleaning head at all. The type of flooring you're trying to clean makes a big difference, too. That's why CNET puts each vacuum we review through

How important is suction power in a cordless vacuum?
Suction matters because it's a good measure of how well a cordless vacuum cleans on different surfaces. Not surprisingly, the Eureka ReactiSense 440 was a powerful performer in our tests, particularly in our sand tests, where it removed the largest cumulative amount of sand from our hardwood, low-pile carpet and midpile carpet test floors.

The 4 Best Cordless Stick Vacuums of 2025 | Reviews by Wirecutter
November 5, 2025 - Though we appreciate the versatility and effectiveness of the Motorbar head (for carpet) and the Laser Slim Fluffy head (for bare flooring), switching them can be annoying, especially if you just want to give your half-carpeted dining room a quick once-over. And a Wirecutter staffer reports that they struggle to separate the cleaner heads from the body of the vacuum; the click-in mechanism often gets stuck.

1 week ago - Each model goes through the same standardized test process—unsealed suction and airflow measurements, carpet deep-clean pickup, hard-floor crevice pickup, hair-tangle stress tests, filtration efficiency checks, and battery runtime trials. Because our protocol never changes, the scores you see reflect genuine performance, not shifting benchmarks. Curious about the details? Our full testing procedure—covering tools, surfaces, debris mixes, and scoring weights—is available in the How We Test Cordless Vacuums guide.

r/VacuumCleaners on Reddit: Recommended Cordless vacuum for hardwood floor house
April 5, 2024 -
Looking for a cordless vacuum for our house that is almost all hardwood floors. Some tile in there, and a good amount of rugs. Most important to me is something that won't leave scuff marks on the wood floors, and second that we don't need to switch attachments for the rugs. This will also be our primary vacuum, so something of high quality. Willing to spend what I need to if it's worth it.
Right now I'm leaning towards the dyson v12. It has a hardwood floor attachment, but I don't know if that will work at all on rugs. Is the normal attachment safe for wood? we don't want any micro scratches if possible.

The Dyson V12 is one of my favorite Dyson models due to its lightweight and small build while still being impressively powerful and full of features. I would describe its quality as high enough, as I would not say anything else from comparable brands such as LG and Samsung are any better in build. The Dysons are not perfect, but are at least fairly simple to repair and not all that prone to any specific failure points as long as proper maintenance is performed. The most common thing to make them stop working and come into my local vacuum cleaner shop where I have ties is users washing the filters and installing them when they are still wet. Of course, batteries do not last forever, but Dyson did alter their batteries to be easy to swap and add. The standard V12 comes with both the Fluffy Optic laser hard floor roller and a Motorbar universal head that works for carpet, so it should work completely fine for your rugs. The hard floor rollers of Dyson cordless vacuum cleaners are designed and tested to specifically float lightly and damage-free on hardwood floors, so as long as you are not sucking anything sharp or ridiculous into it with the hard floor roller, it should just dust them nicely. The hard floor roller spins really slowly and should not damage floors any more than a non-spinning hard floor brush moving back and forth. The Motorbar head is less gentle, so I would use the Fluffy Optic head for hardwood and change to the Motorbar head for the rugs. As for the V12 not being suited to be a primary vacuum cleaner, Dyson intends their models from the V10 and higher to be primary units and I have not seen any evidence to sway me in the opposite direction. People said the same garbage about cordless tools, but we all know how that turned out. Both cordless and corded tools can still have their place. I think some people forget that a large chunk of the world's population successfully cleans their floors with a broom or mechanical sweeper, so saying that a modern cordless vacuum cleaner from a reputable company is not able to stand up to the task is flat silly.
