Another BTF fanboy here. Their 24volt COB strips are worth a bit extra money, and the color quality is very good. Not sure what you mean by 'color range', and scared to ask. Answer from Expensive-Sentence66 on reddit.com

r/led on Reddit: help to find good, solid, affordable LED lights for my room?
April 19, 2023 -

I’m looking to (finally) get LED lights around the ceiling of my room. We measured and i’m going to need a 60 foot strip. I look everywhere online, on youtube but all I find are “guides” from scams or cheap companies, or when they are legit the reviews say they are trash. Also not looking to totally gut my wallet, a budget option would be nice. Not looking for much, LEDs that can get pretty bright and dim, a good white, and a good color range. Also want them to last long and not fall off. Any and all help is appreciated

r/homeautomation on Reddit: What would be good rgbic led strips for a bedroom?
April 22, 2022 -

Here's my detail. I want to get better led lights for my room since my current ones are lacking. I would like for them to rgbic so I can do cool and pretty lighting effects in my room. I also have blackout curtains for the best effect. I would like the strips to also be smooth so diffusers or diy diffusing techniques would be great. The budget for this project however is undisclosed since this would be a Christmas gift.

I would like the cheapest option for the best quality possible, since I don't know the budget. It's fine if a better option is more expensive but I'd possible I'd like to be able to compare the two. I know this is a lot to ask for a stranger but I am a complete noob to this and I am pretty overwhelmed with all the different things that comes with it. That why I decided asking people who are more experienced would be better than screwing myself over.

By the way, 16.4 ft is good enough for a pretty decent amount of a corner in my room. So two of those would be enough for me. The power supply would just be a normal power outlet. Thanks for taking the time to read this. :)

I know very little about lighting, I know there’s cool light and warm light, what’s generally the best light to look for for general bedroom ceiling bulbs?

Warm, below 3000K. You want to minimize blue light. Are you talking about recessed bulbs, or regular bulbs?

Link or photo of the Sputnik? Well, I have some things to procrastinate so we'll just cover the spread. Generally speaking, I agree with under 3000K. K (Kelvin) = color only. Lumens = brightness. Orange can be brighter than white. Higher Kelvin and lumens for productivity, lower for relaxing. They used to market watts as measuring brightness because more energy, more light. Then LEDs came along and f'd it all up because they were brighter using 1/4 of energy. So that's why you'll see '65w equivalent'. Go for dimmable ones at least so you're not stuck with one brightness. I'd also go with a smart switch at least as well. Super duper easy to install. I promise the rest of your house will soon follow. The one other metric to consider is the Color Rendering Index (CRI), which shows you 'true' colors compared to sunlight. Think of putting on a navy and a black sock but don't realize it until you're outside. Anything above a 90 is passable, if it doesn't say, there's a reason so move on. Now to the bulb itself (lol), I assume since it's Sputnik the bulbs will be exposed, so you don't want the typical LED's that resemble snow cones (or maybe you do) so we're looking at filament (Edison) bulbs. This is the one type that I think 99% of the LEDs look like cheap knock offs compared to the incandescent, no matter the price. I've ran across just a couple I was impressed with. Generally the ones with a spiral 'filament' seem to be better, yrmv. There's also the corn cob bulb, typically for producing a ton of light in commercial settings, but if done right they can look pretty snazzy. The Sputnik in my kitchen has corn cobs, photo . And yet GE's HD bulbs are some of the best I've seen ('Relax' in your case). I don't know if I helped narrow it down but at least you're informed.

I've tested one set of 2838 LEDs from Amazon for crown molding project and will likely add these to all bedrooms. I'll likely go with brighter 5050s on a dimmer.

Anyone care to share their fav source for LEDs at AliExpress, Amazon, etc?

LED strip lights are one of those things where there are a ton of different and varying qualities, outputs, and lifespans. I have done a lot of research and have favorites. The question for you is really, what is the intended use and lifespan you are looking for vs budget.

If you are looking for something that will last 10-15 years, have amazing color rendering, use the best LEDs with the best phosphors, 3-4oz copper strip for heat dissipation, and a really bright output, you probably want to avoid aliexpress and most amazon sellers. I am sure there are great ones on amazon. I couldnt find it. Also here in this page I have seen people link to amazon with referral links. Check the link before you take someones advice.

5050s are the older LED type and pretty inefficient compared to the new LEDs out there. If you are looking for color changing RGB, yeah the 5050s are good. But if you are looking for cove lighting with a nice warm white... I would recommend 3014, 2835, 2216, and 2110 LEDs (in high density).

You're probably going to need something 300-500 lumen per foot + on a dimmer if you need some good output.

I recommend going with a 24V light, as you can make longer runs without doltage drop or uses of amplifiers.

Amazon is a crapshoot. I have had great results for small behind the TV projects but when purchased again from same seller, the product changed and was junk. Others I got from amazon got too hot. I think they are overdriving the LEDs to achieve brightness.

Option 1 - Flexfire LEDs - Great super-bright product. I ordered years ago and the lights are still extremely bright, run cool, and they had a design service for free where I took my photos of my project and they built it all out and quoted it. A little more than I wanted to spend but for a 30-day guarantee, I said go for it. They have like 1500+ 5-star reviews that I assume are real. I love these.

Option 2 - Elemental LEDs I also tried these guys but I cannot find where you can buy online anymore. They had a good selection of dimmers and remotes and I used their lower output lights on my kickboards. They are still running well!

Option 3 - Environmental Lights - Great for DMX and controlls. I havent tried their lights honestly but the specs look good.

Just make sure you compare apples to apples and compare:

  1. Lumen output per foot

  2. How many oz of copper in PCB

  3. Watts/foot

  4. Maximum run length

  5. warranty

  6. compatibility with dimming systems

  7. for me... customer support and warranty

  8. Price. I tend to go higher quality = higher price. I think I paid like $115 for the Flex fire stuff per reel but it was 3x as bright as the other stuff and has lasted forever.

  9. Color temperature and CRI (will each reel you get match the other reels color?) You do not want 5 reels with different shades of white, even a slight variation sucks.

I love strips and have them everywhere... Good luck

I am looking for this info as well. I picked up a Lightify starter kit on prime day. Having a hard time figuring out what 5 pin led strips are best to use for adding on... Because 6 feet is just not enough.

r/led on Reddit: LED Strip recommendations - Whole room ceiling edge lighting project
December 30, 2018 -

Hi,

My other half and I are currently in the process of redecorating and improve our Smart Home life, we've automated a lot of stuff and it dawned on us we just don't have enough lighting in the bedroom, so we're looking to free up the areas around the top edges of the wall / ceiling and put some aluminium channels / housings there with LED strips inside.

The channels I've bought are these: Link

Here's a panorama shot of some of the room, most of the stuff behind the red drawn on lines will be removed / replaced to accommodate our new lights.

Panorama Shot of the room prior to redecoration & light fixtures

I've done a bit of research and it seems that 24v LED Strips are the way to go, we're currently rocking a 6500k 1500 Lumens RGBW Smart Bulb in the middle of the room which provides a decent amount of lighting, but as the room's so large it just isn't enough.

So we're looking for the following:

24v LED Strip of 15m in length + suitable Power Supply

6500k Daylight White (RGB is not required)

At least 1000 Lumens (may not be necessary since the whole room will be lit due to the strips?)

Sizes 3528, 5050 & 5630 with 10mm width, to fit the channels I've bought.

Smart Controller, for Home Automation (dimming and Google Home On / Off via voice & Phone)

My issue is that I can't seen to find anything suitable, so I was told to give this place a go as somebody here may be able to help!

Would anyone have any recommendations, or alternatives to suggest so we can complete this project?

Thank you all in advance! :)

Awesome project! Great that you've already found out that you want to go with 24v instead of 12v! That's going to make it look a lot nicer and even. Generic RGB+CCT strip uses about 70w for 5 meters so that's not that much per channel (5 channels) but still I would advise against running it all as a long strip, the problem is that with cheap strip, the amount of copper just isn't there (even not for the 5m really) and the Amps your going to be running through it is too much. Especially since although there are 5 negative channels (one per color) there is only a single positive channel! The first part of the strip will heat up A LOT and the end of the strip will look dimmer, even when using 24v. I'd suggest splitting up the strip and keeping them as 5m parts and then having a controller per 5m part. Since you're using Domotica (I'm assuming Home Assistant) you can just link those together so they will act as one strip in software and for commands. If not, that might be something to look into. The other alternative is running wires along the strip and injecting power every 5 meter. That way you can keep it as a single strip but you're going to need a lot of wires of considerable thickness and it's generally harder to setup then the above option. I also agree with what the others are saying that 6500k is very harsh light. Normally living room lighting is somewhere between 2600K and 3000K. Personally I'm very partial to the quality of white light (CRI above 90) so don't use RGB+CCT strip because they are too much of a compromise to me. The power output and the quality for normal generic lighting just isn't there. Also it's very expensive strip (5 in 1 package version) to use, much more so than combining a RGB and separate white or CCT strip. Still, if you are set to having one 10mmx10mm channel, you are limited in options and if you don't mind (or see) low quality light, that's ok. Just make sure not to use it in a kitchen or something like that, you'll be baking your meat for days because of the wrong red colors in the light. ;) Controller wise there are several options out there. The H801 can be used, it has a ESP8266 inside which can be re-programmed to work with MQTT and Home Assistant. Be aware though that it won't support super high PWM (flicker) values but if you aren't going to film in that room, that's fine. Another option is Magic Home controllers (2 links in this topic are towards those controllers), those can be had cheap on Aliexpress and work okay, but again not super high PWM value and not very high power handling (definitely no more than a 5m low power strip). I also have my own DIY controllers I use called the QuinLED-Quad and QuinLED-Deca which can also do this stuff but it's a bit more complicated if you also have to build your own controllers during your first go at this! If you'd like more information about certain topics, I kindly invite you to read http://quinled.info . It has lots of topics including 24v, white light, RGB+CCT strips, etc.. Your main challenge is the length, if you can figure out a good plan for that, the rest should be easy. :)

I'm wanting to get some LED light strips for my room, mainly for underneath the wall shelf above my desk, and was wondering what I should get. I do also want to get diffuser tracks to make it look better, and would prefer to not spend a ton of money.

I was looking at some and reading, would 5050 rgbw 60leds/m leds be the best way to go if I can afford it? Also which diffuser track would be best to get if you all have any recommendations. Appreciate any feedback and help!
