I’m a senior manager and have recently had a data analyst put under me as one of the many areas I oversee. I am mostly a hobbyist when it comes to data analysis and visualization but I can tell he has a lot to learn. Besides linking him up with other analytics groups in the company, I want to get approval for him to attend training the company would pay for. I think he needs to work on Dax and I guess I would say the aesthetic side of things. Any recommendations? Open to free training too, but those lend themselves more to being done on your own time, and I’m not sure he’s really got that motivation in him.

Our team bought a few SQLBI courses last year. They’re pricey, but we share the login amongst 4 engineers. I had been working with Power BI for 3/4 years, and was self taught Dax. Probably would have rated myself an honest 5 before the course. A true 5, not an interview 5. I could do any basics, understood architecture, advanced dax functions, etc. but didn’t understand how Power BI really worked under the hood. You can probably see my post history for a rough timeline. Lol. After the course, I would say I’m at about a 7/8 depending on the day. It may not sound like much, but 5->7 changes between “Is that possible?” to “What is the best process to do this?” It also helps me think less of “How can I make my Dax do what I want” to more “How can I change my architecture to do what I want, and sprinkle in some DAX for flavor?” I understand the engine and limitations much better, I can optimize my DAX, and I can push way outside the box of traditional Power BI. There is an incredible world of workarounds in Power Bi, and it taught me the missing pieces to really hit the next level in my career. My $.02 for what it’s worth. Also took the enterprise DNA course, was a waste of time.

If you want to pay, spqlbi is the best by far in the long run. One of the only platforms that teach actual ways of solving complex dax equations. A lot of their videos are on youtube for free too. Others have listed good alternatives but i just think sqlbi will teach the best practices for long term advanced development. I would have said enterprisedna is decent as well, but Sam's unprofessionalism on reddit the other day will have me say, go find alternatives. Plus i found out they ripped off some tools other developers made without giving them credit, which is sketchy. And lastly, i have to give GuyInACube youtube channel a shoutout. Awesome youtube channel, they seem like great people and push out a ton of great content.

I will recommend MS Learn it is complete.

honestly you dont need any paid online courses to learn powerBI. the important parts can all be learned from youtube or by simply reading microsofts own documentation. everything else is just experience.

There are no "best" free course, all the resources that other commenters mentioned are good, but which one is the best depends on which style do you prefer. The number of courses available can be overwhelming, so my advice would be to just try one of them, see if you can easily follow the course, and continue until the end if it suits you. After you completed a course, do not search for another course. Straightaway look for your own dataset to practice. And then practice again. And practice again. And again. As you practice with different kind of datasets and use cases, you will need to google/ask around on how to solve different issues. That is how you will learn the most.

Microsoft learn is the primary resource, its free. Work through the pl300 learning path and top up with YT on topics that are a bit tricky to see more in depth explanations with more real world examples. "DAX guide" is also one of the best resources. If you are coming from Excel you will be very frustrated initially. Things "that just take 2 seconds" seem very hard in PBI. For a while you will wonder what the point is, until one day you will have the "ah hah" moment and from that point on you will understand. The first major difference is the data has to formatted correctly and (mostly) only has column context which is wierd when you come from spreadsheets where everything is row and column context A1, B6 etc. Master Power Query to clean and tidy your data and load it into Power BI. That's right there are basically two separate programs within PBI desktop. That confuses people. When your data is in PBI from Power query the next whole new world is data modelling, joining tables together with relationships. This is an entire skill in itself. Then DAX for calculated columns just like excel formulas in tables. Although familiar, with experience you understand they should only be used as last resort. Measures, the secret sauce that turbocharges your content. Little variables that can be used almost anywhere to bring hugely powerful insight into data. Visuals and thier formatting with hundreds of options on each one. Play with the ones from the store but 90% of work is achieved with just the standard visuals but there is a massive, deep rabbit hole of custom visuals Finally, the top tier of "I understand this" is filter context. Which is how all these elements work together to create incredible depth of analysis on a single page. Good luck.

Might be ridiculed for saying this but I have started a Datacamp subscription for 30£ a month, which gives a 50% off exam fees if you complete the course. So my math suggests that if I complete the course within the next two months I will break even when sitting the exam (:

I think Maven stuff is great but also Microsoft Learn and their learning paths are great too. Free and you can take practice tests. The exam and Microsoft Learn and very well aligned, additionally during the exam you are allowed to use Microsoft learn as a quick resource. So can’t hurt to get familiar with navigating it.

I want to learn Microsoft Power BI from scratch, and I have some experience in Microsoft Excel and I tried to read Microsoft docs about power bi but it's confusing, so can any one please suggest me a website or any YouTube channel or any paid service where I can learn in depth.

First off, I'm still a novice as well. But "Guy in a Cube" is a great channel on YouTube with lots of "how to's" for Power BI. I've learned a lot from them.

The bulk of what I have learned has been from trial and error working with my own data on my own projects and searching for help if/when I get stumped on something. Following tutorials was generally a waste of time for me. The one source I will say is useful is if you can find samples of PBI reports and dashboards that others have produced so you can copy some of their formatting ideas. Other than that, you really have to roll up your sleeves and try out some things on your own. Oh, and above all else, make sure you know what you are doing with your data sources. If you know SQL, great. If you know where the flaws are in your data, even better. Preparing and loading the data is 1/3 the battle, creating DAX measures is another 1/3 of the battle, and the final 1/3 is layout and design.

If you are getting into DAX then shout out for Elements of DAX by Brian Grant . Its free, breaks down DAX into great conceptual chunks, introduces functions at an appropriate pace, and builds upon itself gradually until you can think in DAX (which is a different skill from thinking in either Excel formulas or SQL queries). We've put my team (8 data/dashboard devs) through it for learning DAX and consider it better than what is generally available on Udemy, Datacamp, Enterprise DNA, and maybe even SQLBI (controversial opinion I know), all of which we've tried before. Note that if you want worldwide acceptance then the other best option is Power BI on Microsoft Learn . Its free and you only pay if you want to get certified.

Dashboard in a day is free and held by Microsoft. It’s a good starting point

As the title suggests, I am looking to learn everything there is in powerBI. I want to learn right from data modelling, to learning advanced DAX to being good at creating aesthetic designs. I am decent at powerBI, but struggle with understanding complex DAX, or understanding how to arrange data in the most optimised way(star schema, one single fact table etc.) Currently I am working on a survey data, and the person helping me suggested that I unpivot the rows to make my job easier and it never even struck me that it could be done. So how do I reach that level and where do I start? I want to know what all to cover so that I know I have covered the basics of all topics. Thanks in advance!!

Good start for building the first dashboard and explore the function I had experience in Power Query so very quickly understand the concept of data cleaning and transform For visualization, it is easy. But the hardest part is to choose the “right” chart to deliver your information. video from youtube can give you on tips Dax is tough and hard for excel user. Measure and filter concept is quiet blur because the result is not a table, not a row, not a value, but it will change bases on filter. Fortunate, dax built on power pivot so a old book on power pivot can help u with dax. Reading that and follow that book so you can understand how to write the dax fomular and because it use power pivot and excel so the outcome is very easy to catch up
