My top 10 from 2023- The Last of Us (HBO)- Dystopian adventure/drama. If you’ve ever played the video game, you’ll know the story. If you haven’t, definitely recommend the show. It’s a fantastic adaptation. Can be quite heavy. Shrinking (Apple)- Dramedy about a grieving therapist and his life. Jason Segel and Harrison Ford are so good in their roles. Lots of heart. Daisy Jones & The Six (Prime)- Documentary style drama about a fictional band in the 70’s. Inspired by Fleetwood Mac. Really good story and fantastic music. Riley Keough and Sam Claflin are tremendous as the two leads. The Fall of the House of Usher (Netflix)- Horror/Mystery based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Story is engaging, creepy, and unsettling. Really, really good. Gen V (Prime)- Spin off of The Boys. College superheroes trying to navigate life. If you like The Boys, you will like this. I really enjoyed it. Bloody, raunchy, fun. Silo (Apple)- Dystopian mystery. Future civilization lives in underground silos although no one is really sure why. The sheriff is trying to solve a mysterious death. Can feel a little slow at times but I thought the show was engaging and really well done. Beef (Netflix)- Starts out as a simple altercation between strangers and just continues to escalate from there. Definitely the most unpredictable and WTF show I watched last year. Easily binged. Poker Face (Peacock)- Episodic, mystery of the week type show from the mind of Rian Johnson. Interesting, funny, and Natasha Lyonne was built for this role. Tons of guest stars. Just a fun show. Twisted Metal (Peacock)- A show based on a video game series where you don’t do anything but wreck things in cars had no business being as entertaining as it was. Doesn’t take itself seriously at all but had a surprisingly solid storyline. Enjoyable. Platonic (Apple)- comedy about two long time friends who bring out the worst in each other. Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne have great chemistry. Really easy and quick watch that’ll definitely make you laugh.

December 15, 2023 - And yet, when we asked the six regular TV critics at this site (Brian Tallerico, Nandini Balial, Cristina Escobar, Clint Worthington, Rendy Jones, and Kaiya Shunyata) to name their faves of the year, we got dozens of shows that really reflect a wide spectrum of genre, interest, and POV. So something must be working. We’ve assembled 25 of the best and we’re still missing undeniable gems like “What We Do in the Shadows” and the strike-truncated “Abbott Elementary.” There was a cool “Justified” reboot this year too that didn’t make it.

December 4, 2023 - When trying to whittle down 2023’s good TV shows to a list of the year’s ten greatest, I consider multiple criteria. A major one is currency: Does the work in question feel particularly of the moment or Zeitgeisty? Beef, the relentlessly tense Netflix limited series from Lee Sung Jin, absolutely checks that box.

December 8, 2023 - What Slow Horses gets right is one of TV’s oldest tricks: propulsion over plausibility, stakes without self-seriousness. And the third season of this British action drama is far and away the best of the series so far, one of those flywheel seasons of television where zippy pacing and well-timed cliffhangers make you want to hammer that next episode button as soon as you can.
