r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Super uneven subfloor. What are my options?
January 11, 2019 -

Man I'm ripping up a lot of floors these months! I'm dealing with an incredibly uneven subfloor right now. Used to be carpet. Previous owner filled the most egregious valleys with floor leveling compound that's old and turning into dust. So i need to decide the following:

How to fix it? And then what to put down - laminate or vinyl plank?

So I can either hire someone to just put big sheets of plywood down across the entire floor. Generally speaking, if i do this, I won't need to otherwise correct the flooring right?

Or, I could grab my planer, my belt sander, and some levelling compound and do my best to level it out a bit.

In terms for flooring, I'm either doing cheap laminate or cheap ish LVP (it's a rental). The laminate is a bit more forgiving because i have an underlayment but for the vinyl plank if i remember correctly the floor has to be perfectly flat because you don't use an underlayment. The kind i used has sticky edges and you just stuck the edge of one piece to the edge of another.

I loved how easy the LVP was. I didn't need a saw! I'm terrible at a jig saw so even though I've done laminate before it's frustrating and any detailed areas don't look so great.

If i hire someone to put sheets of plywood down, do i still need to use floor leveler? If I use laminate, could I get away with planing down the worst peaks but leaving a bit of unevenness and getting a thick underlayment?

Best Flooring for Uneven Floor Surfaces - In Home Flooring
July 10, 2025 - Start by assessing the extent of the unevenness in your floor. For minor imperfections, self-leveling compounds are highly effective. These compounds can fill low spots and smooth out high areas, creating a level base for your tiles. For more significant unevenness, you might need additional measures such as applying a cement backer board or extra underlayment to achieve a sufficiently flat surface.

The next step is to seal up cracks and holes in the floor and joints. Using spray foam around the wall lines is a great way to make sure cracks are filled so your underlayment won’t go where it isn’t intended. Trimming the excess spray foam takes time but is worth it! If your concrete is cracked, we recommend filling the cracks with caulk, but make sure to wait 24 hours for it to dry before moving on to step 3.

How to Choose the Best Underlayment for Your Flooring
February 19, 2021 - Tiles are a popular flooring choice for bathrooms, entryways, or any high-traffic area where a water-resistant surface is required. Tile underlayment must provide good support, so tiles and grout won’t crack when walked upon. It must also be flexible enough to absorb movement and any expansion or contraction that results from sudden temperature or humidity changes.

Installing Laminate Flooring Over Concrete - The Ultimate Guide | AA Floors
March 21, 2024 - Here’s a guide to installing laminate flooring over concrete to get great-looking floors that last for years. The installation process will vary according to the type of laminate planks and tiles you choose. They can be floated on the subfloor, for instance, if they have a click-lock system. Here are a few things you will need for the installation: Floorboards: Buy 10% more square footage of floorboards than is necessary to ensure you have enough in stock in case of wastage. Underlayment: The underlayment should be chosen keeping in mind the installation method as well as the room’s subfloor.
