Used to do exactly this, before moving on to a heavier duty mattress (less maintenance). If you're already thinking of a Nitori futon, look at their frames, might as well get it all in one place. Just keep in mind that for a futon, you want a slatted underside to allow it to breathe. Most Ikea frames have slatted bases, and Nitori has a number of frames that are specifically designed for using a futon . Don't get a straight up platform type bed (solid surface) or you'll be facing mold and mildew problems. More on reddit.com

Those of you who keep a mattress or a futon on the floor: Please remember a mattress needs to breath, it stores a lot of humidity from sweat while sleeping. Put it upwards /put the futon away every day. Once I got into trouble with my landlord (as a student, a time of life when visits from the landlord from time to time were widely accepted), he insisted I use a bedframe, because the floor beneath might get damaged due to funghi developing. My roommate recently moved out and I decided to convert that room into a guest room/reading room. It’s a small space so I’m looking for a futon/folding sofa type thing to put in there. My requirements are that it be less than 80” wide and actually comfortable to sit on AND sleep on. Does such a product exist? Does anyone have a futon they actually like?
