r/knifeclub on Reddit: Blade play in general
April 18, 2024 -
I just grabbed a Benchmade mini adamas, and it has just the smallest amount of blade play side to side when I really try to wiggle it. I was wondering if most knives, really no matter how expensive will have some blade play if you put a decent enough pressure on it? I’m new to this and just curious if it’s common or I got a lemon?

Side to side is normal in a folding knife that uses washers because the blade needs a little bit of room to glide easily. If you tighten that down, you can't flick the knife anymore at all. If the tolerances are very good then the side to side play might be less. The Adamas has washers. Tighten the pivot to find the sweet spot of minimal play with a smoothness of action you're comfortable with. Folders with ball bearings tend to be tighter and have virtually no play.

You either have great action but a small amount of blade play, or stiff action and no blade play (assuming there’s no other issues with the knife, and it’s well built). It all comes down ultimately to how much you have the pivot tightened. If you truly never want blade play and never want to mess with a knife’s pivot then fixed blades are the way to go.

What is blade play & how do I know if my knife has it? - Spyderco Forums
I know this may be a dumb question, but at the risk of sounding ignorant, I am requesting someone explain horizontal & vertical blade play to me. For all I know, several of my Spydies could have it without me even knowing about it. Again, I apologize for my ignorance. A few knives have barely perceptible blade play, as in I kind of have to wrench it around to feel it. Is that within normal bounds?

Are they brand new? Even if so, it's most likely fine. I don't know of a folding knife that isn't going to have a tiny amount of blade play on at least some knives of that model after a little use. I don't mean there should be a lot of blade play, but many knives will have a tiny, barely perceptible movement if you are looking for it. I imagine they would be very hard to open if they didn't. Now that I think about it though, the Opinel might be the best knife I've seen when it comes to blade play. Between the swivel lock and the wood, the blade is usually pinched solid. If you want a modern folder that has no chance or arriving with a tiny, tiny amount of blade play, much less developing it over time, you are probably gonna be disappointed. I'll emphasize that I'm talking about the absolute smallest amount of movement. Many people might not even notice, it's so little. I find almost 100% knives have this, and if they don't out of the box, they will after a week of use. It's just the nature of folders.

If you get no rattling from up-and-down play when you shake the knife that direction, it's fine. If you have to apply force, you might get what feels like play, but is really just you putting force on the lock and making it move.

Up & Down Blade Play - All About Pocket Knives
But was annoyed, should not happen with brand new knives after two months of light use. ... Excellent topic! I really appreciate the input and Eric's great drawing! Some of the newer LB blades have a larger pivot hole drilled in them and they also use a bushing. If that bushing is worn significantly couldn't that also cause the up & down play in the blade?

Blade play – NemoKnivesReview
As I had pointed earlier, going back to the Endura or the Delica (no choil, lockback, steel spacer) is like going vintage in a beautiful way. Those are the roots of modern “tactical” folders: “one hand opening and closing” and “Clip-it”. The Endura I have bought from the Knifecenter is just flawless: zero blade play.

Is blade play bad? - Spyderco Forums
No blade play is always better than some. Slight blade play in either plane is harmless but can be annoying, more so to some people than others. Play like that is common, although far from universal. The "good news", at least for me, is that any Spydercos I own which had slight blade play when I received them still have the same amount after considerable use.

What is "real" blade play? | BladeForums.com
May 31, 2012 - Blade play is blade play. I have two knives that will not allow any play, no matter how much muscle I use or how fast I wiggle the blade. These are the exceptions though since pretty much every other knife I have will wiggle a little bit if forced. I don't really find blade play unacceptable unless you can hold the knife by the handle and shake the blade about like a rattle.
