What's the Difference Between Bluetooth Headsets and Headphones?

Stereo headphones aren't just for listening to music; they also make calls, often quite well. So, if you're thinking about some wireless headphones to rock out to, you might not need a separate Bluetooth headset. Remember that stereo headphones can sometimes be bulky and might not block distracting environmental noises competently.

By contrast, the stereo headsets in this roundup are lighter and often have boom mics that easily isolate your voice. We compare the two options more decisively in our roundup of the best headsets and headphones for your home office.

How Much Should You Spend on a Bluetooth Headset?

The sweet spot for a mono Bluetooth headset is around $100, and if you shop around, you can often find discounts that lower the price slightly. A quality stereo headset generally runs between $150 and $300. The headsets in this roundup are on the high end of that price range because we focused on the absolute best-performing devices for people who rely on their headsets all day.

You can often find a decent (or even excellent) headset for under $50 because they tend to remain in retail channels for a long time after the manufacturer discontinues them. Cheaper Jabra, Motorola, and Poly headsets work fine; they just aren't up to the performance standards of the more expensive category leaders. Typically, they are a bit clunkier and don't offer as effective noise cancellation, but then again, you aren't paying a premium for them.

Bluetooth headset with best microphone for business calls?
I have both the Shokz OpenMeet and the Shokz OpenComm2. Both provide a good amount of background noise reduction with the OpenMeet being a bit better. I prefer the OpenComm2 while traveling and away from office while using the OpenMeet in office. The OpenMeet is a bit bulkier on head and not great for moving around but amazingly light nonetheless. FYI - for in-ear earbuds I think the Huawei Freebuds Pro 4 are top of line for calls and I have Apple, Jabra, Bose, Sony, etc., and haven’t seen anything come close from call perspective. I can wear in an airport and take Teams / Zoom call and people cannot hear any background noise. Check out both DHRME and Headset Advisor on YouTube. I’ve never seen better review teams for headphones and business headsets respectively. More on reddit.com

Bluetooth headphones with the best microphone for taking calls?
Like it was mentioned already, BT will be the limiting factor but also the audio compression codec used by your calling app (Teams, Zoom etc.) You'll get better results with a headset that has a boom mike, stay away from the ones with the microphones built into the ear cups, they will make you sound even more muffled to the other party. Since you want wireless, here's the three setups that have boom mikes I've used: Airpods Max with a wireless Antlion mod mic (attaches magnetically to the ear cup) - best option for sound quality and noise suppression or transparency for you, but obviously not within the budget amount you've mentioned. Jabra Evolve 75 - overall a good option, comes with a USB dongle for your computer which is way more stable and easier to use than regular BT (which it also has). You'll sound just fine to the other party and it even has some rudimentary active noise cancellation. Good option overall, I don't like use it though because I hate not being able to hear myself when I speak, so I always used to shift one ear cup sideways to open up an ear so I could hear myself clearly. The battery life is amazing, they'll easily last the whole day and then some. Also have multipoint connection, ie they'll connect via the dongle to your laptop and via BT to your phone or tablet, and you can seamlessly switch between the two. Great set if you don't mind not hearing yourself clearly while talking. Shokz Opencomm 2 UC - a bone conduction set, meaning that the sound is not produced by a speaker sitting on or over your ear, but by two fully enclosed transducers which sit on your temples in front of your ears. Pluses - comes with a USB (type A or type C) dongle so super stabled and no hassles with dropped BT connectivity or Teams decided to switch to your laptop mic and speakers after an update or a restart. Because your ears are not obstructed in any way, you have full auditory awareness of what's going on around you, this can be a plus or a minus depending on your environment and preference. The headset is super lightweight and you can barely feel it after a while. Also the battery lasts all day. The minuses - again, no sonic isolation or active noise cancelling for obvious reasons, the sound quality is great for speech but not so much for music since they're optimized for the vocal dynamic range. Also, some people report that they experience discomfort wearing them - I can see where that is coming from but I am used to wearing them. Overall, their pros definitely outweigh the small cons for me and this is now the headset I use for daily calls while working from home pretty much full time. More on reddit.com

Keep in mind you’ll need Bluetooth enabled in your codeplug, and the right device types selected. Besides that, it should just be making sure Bluetooth is on and touching the two blue dots together. r/AskMenOver30 on Reddit: What’s a good Bluetooth headset for someone who takes a lot of calls during the day?
May 22, 2025 -

My father takes a lot of calls — during the day, in the lab, around machines, even while driving. So I’ve been planning on getting him something small, not in-ear, with good battery life and a strong mic that can handle loud environments (like next to engines, vacuum pumps, etc.).

I personally use AirPods for noise cancelation, but that’s not really his thing.

Don’t care about budget, just want something that’s good quality and built for this kind of use.

Figured some of you older folks might know something I don’t, despite all the research. Any suggestions?

EDIT: I forgot to mention , my dad wears glasses , so I feel like if it sits on the back of his ear, might not be comfortable. Maybe some of you might know the struggle .

February 10, 2021 - Battery lasts all day, clear speaker / signal, and great microphone. Also designed to work with Webex, Zoom, and Teams. I bought a cheap one off Amazon before I got this one Open Box off Ebay for $50 bucks. Was well worth it. The cheap one I sent back as it was terrible in comparison. It beeps every 30 seconds to let you know its muted. Could be a minute. Never really timed it. Just download Jabra Direct for your pc and it'll be configurable then. https://www.amazon.com/Jabra-Wireless-Bluetooth-Headphones-Packaging/dp/B0728KWLZK

r/Headsets on Reddit: Bluetooth headset with best microphone for business calls?
April 16, 2025 -

Hi, I take a lot of business video calls from my office. I also have a toddler and lawn mowers in the background that I would like for my audience to not hear. I also don't want to wear a massive bulky headset on camera that makes me look like an air traffic controller.

I have looked at a few options that might accomplish what I'm looking for but I would like your opinions. I have looked a the Sony WF1000XM5, the Bose Quiet Comfort, the BlueParrot M300, the Poly CS540. But what do you think is the most effective headset at blocking out background noise so that my audience can't hear any of it?

Are you using Zoom? What kind of computer are you using? For me, zoom does a good enough job of noise cancelling that I don’t worry about anything else when I’m in my house. I’ve also discovered that my MacBook Pro (m4) has pretty impressive noise canceling - I’ve used it for video calls while at a park and the person on the other side was amazed at how good it sounded. I have used a blueparrot for years for phone calls out of the house and it’s hard to beat for that, but it’s bulky and ugly and I’ve spent years trying to find something that came even kinda close that wasn’t so big, but everything i’ve tried falls woefully short for me. I see people talk about opencomm, but the noise canceling on both pair of shokz I’ve owned was not good.

December 20, 2023 -

I wanted to ask what the best options are when im looking for a pair of bluetooth headphones that have a good mic suitable for calls. My budget is 225 USD. And yes know that i would get better sound for cheaper with a wire but they have to be wireless.

When i looked into this i found that bose (specifically the Bose 700) is supposed to have very good microphones but i also wanted an outside opinion.

Thanks :D
