I somehow got hold of this when I was 10 to 12 years old. You could run it with basic programming. It was really cool.
It was weird but you had to load a separate module for vowels. Otherwise it couldn’t speak the and they would just buzz.

My 10 year old self enjoyed hours of laughs getting SAM to say cuss words with just the right inflection and also to record naughty phrases that I could then use with my tape player and still have plausible deniability. “Really mom, it wasn’t me! It was the computer obviously!”. 🤣

I'm not entirely sure how to phrase my question properly, so I'm not sure if I make sense. I'm not that familiar with the Commodore 64, so I figured I'd ask here. Maybe my reasoning below could further explain what I mean.
I have an idea for a video and want to use the C64 SAM voice module (I like how it sounds), but I'm not sure if there's some kind of copyright protection associated with it or if it's a public domain/CC0 thing.

A few minutes of research answered this question fully: https://github.com/s-macke/SAM#License If you don't want to run the 'risk' of using SAM in particular, you can use this Reversed Engineered version that sounds exactly the same, but doesn't hold the same legal issues. ...which might be nothing at all as it seems like the people who coded this version also asked themselves the same question.

Good question, but it might fair better in a legal forum. I have doubts that the IP owners of SAM are suing people for using their text to speech product in videos, but that doesnt answer the question of do they have a legitimate case if they were to.

The Software based text-to-speech speech synthesizer package that required no additional hardware. But if back then, you only had a VIC-20 then you missed out, because SAM won't run on such a system, there simply aren't enough resources, since the VIC-20 doesn't have enough RAM.
