Effective federal tax rate vs income with a 70% rate added once you hit $10 million [OC]
Marginal tax rates and potential confusion around them have been in the news a bit lately. I'd never actually seen the effective rate and marginal rate plotted together this way and it worked out well. I used the single-filer rates, and assumed the only deduction being used is the standard deduction. I also added in a 70% rate for incomes over $10 million since that's been in the news also. I used matplotlib for the plot. I have a related plot (take home pay after federal tax vs income) and some more discussion here: http://www.somesolvedproblems.com/2019/01/how-do-marginal-tax-rates-work.html Edit: Linear Scale Scanning through the comments, a number of people asked about log scales. If you're curious what it looks like with a linear scale, here you go: https://imgur.com/tXtjnP3 The total x range is much larger than the range where most of the interesting changes happen (i.e., below $1 million), so a linear scale doesn't really work here. Edit 2: More Ticks Here it is with more tick marks: https://imgur.com/a49bzFv I toyed with doing that initially, but: I find the rotated values harder to read I didn't know how comfortable people would be with scientific notation to make the labels smaller It is much easier to see where, say, $50,000 is with the extra ticks though so nice suggestion. Having federal tax withheld (California) on unemployment benefits, is it the smart choice?

If you are financially able to have tax withheld on the unemployment income (you're not going to go homeless or starve), you probably should. You can file a form W-4V to start the process.

Unemployment benefits are taxed federally.

I don't know your situation, but it's also probably smart to think about how much income you will make in 2020. If you already made a fair amount and are looking for another job, you'll probably have a decent amount of taxable income, so I'd say definitely withhold. If you didn't make much and are going to be on unemployment the whole year, only then would I consider not withholding, or withholding less.

-- Edited to remove part about California, thanks for the correction.

Is the California bonus tax rate really 55%?

Why does this same question get posted every week?

The tax rate of a bonus is no different than the tax rate your normal income. You are not paying more, they are withholding more due to the way your payroll department is calculating your income.

So what makes California’s income tax system different from the systems you may have encountered in other states? For one thing, taxes here are considerably higher. The state has nine income tax brackets and the system is progressive. So if your income is on the low side, you'll pay a lower tax rate than you likely would in a flat-tax state.
