[California] 1099G doesn't show Federal Income Tax Withheld
Having federal tax withheld (California) on unemployment benefits, is it the smart choice?
If you are financially able to have tax withheld on the unemployment income (you're not going to go homeless or starve), you probably should. You can file a form W-4V to start the process.
Unemployment benefits are taxed federally.
I don't know your situation, but it's also probably smart to think about how much income you will make in 2020. If you already made a fair amount and are looking for another job, you'll probably have a decent amount of taxable income, so I'd say definitely withhold. If you didn't make much and are going to be on unemployment the whole year, only then would I consider not withholding, or withholding less.

Why does this same question get posted every week?
The tax rate of a bonus is no different than the tax rate your normal income. You are not paying more, they are withholding more due to the way your payroll department is calculating your income.
