Thinking of a new Canon Laser Printer. I’m a bit confused on if newer is better.
MF451dw vs MF642cdw and maybe MF741CDW.
Is the color more expensive to operate? or can I just print using black toner when I don’t need the color, so its not really more expensive?
Based on my good experience with Canon Lasers, I expect them to laser a long time and would be willing to splurge for the color.

I'd recommend against Canon. Printer manufacturers are working harder to lock you into their proprietary software and hardware, and Canon is not quite as bad as HP but still pretty close. Device set up is needlessly complex and using un-supported cartridges will either brick your printer or immediately void the warranty (it has a chip that permanently records relevant information). Try a Brother instead. They've earned a reputation as the most consumer friendly printer company for a reason. Canon does have better tech support, to be sure, but you'll need to contact Brother for fewer things. As for which one, I don't use color lasers much. I got a little monochrome that works perfectly, similar to this one: https://www.brother-usa.com/products/HLL2350DW different model number though.

Brother MFC or HL something. It's the only thing I'll print my TPS reports on since the PC load letter error. Even in the dirty metal grinding shop ours has lasted 5ish years and counting. I think it's a mfc2750 More on reddit.com

If you want my honest opinion, I have to say that most modern printers and brands are pretty lousy. It's a shame, really. Nowadays, companies seem to be more concerned about making money than actually making printers that last. I run a repair workshop, and let me tell you, every new printer model that comes through here is even worse than the one before it. It's frustrating, to say the least. To answer your question if you want a printer that will last for a long time then forget about inkjets and especially ink tank ones, just go for a laser printer. You said "heavy printing and then nothing for a while", just from this sentence I'm sure that an inkjet printer is not for you. Long times without printing will clogged your printer's printhead, if you want to maintain your printer for a long time you need to print at least once every 3 or 4 days, on the other hand overprinting can cause problems to the printhead too, manufacturers give a monthly print cycle for each model on the printers specs. Consistent printing over that cycle will start wearing down the printer and create problems. Laser printers do not have printheads and thus the above problem does not apply to them. You can leave it for a long time without printing and nothing will happen. Laser printers have a max monthly cycle as well, so make sure that your printing needs correspond with that cycle so that you will give more longevity to your printer More on reddit.com

I recommend the Canon imageCLASS MF656Cdw for home, its cheaper than Canon MF753cdw. Canon MF753cdw is a great option if you also want ethernet and faster printing speeds. I don’t think you need to worry about that for home use. I recommend that you read through this datasheet on laser printers . It lists all the models and their specs, making it easy to compare.
