Canon EOS RP review: DPReview | Photography News, Gear Reviews & Community
Just the video quality is fine if you use the Technicolor Cinema Style and tweak the sharpness settings in the camera (set them higher, because the video of the RP is on the soft side). But beware of using vintage lenses: "Modern" lens designs are so much better in sheer technical IQ and they have character too, at least the medium class Canon EF glass like 2.8 100 Macro non-IS, 5.6 400 or the 70-200 L IS mark i.

best use of Canon RP for video
A few things to note: The dummy battery might be useful, since it will address the relatively short battery life. The USB cable will not be useful, as the webcam software is limited to under 720p. You're out of luck for 4k60. The RP maxes out at 4k24 That 4k24 is significantly cropped, and doesn't allow you to use dual-pixel AF. That last part won't really matter if you're shooting in a stationary location, but might cause issues with a moving camera. The RP can't record videos longer than 29:59, so if their set is longer, you'll need to stop recording and start a new recording at some point. Recording externally with a monitor bypasses this, but I'm guessing you don't have one, since you mostly shoot stills. More on reddit.com

r/videography on Reddit: Is the Canon RP worth it for video if anyone has one and uses one regularly?
July 18, 2022 - But when i bought it , the next full frame option was almost the double price of the rp. So i got it! Im happy with it but you gotta learn your way around the limitations. I was using 600d before i got this. I would say not a BIG difference but full frame is good in low light, also 50mm is the actual 50mm and depth of field is just great, focus follow is better on the r5,r7 etc. At the end of the day, i got this to dip my toes in the world of full frame cameras but would not rig this one for a video.

Canon EOS RP video specs leaked, shoots 1.6x crop 4K 8bit but NO C-LOG - $1299! - EOSHD.com - Filmmaking Gear and Camera Reviews
February 13, 2019 - It falls just short of the 1.5x crop Super 35mm cameras, like the Fuji X-T3 and Sony A6500. No big deal. It is exactly Canon APS-C. No pixel binned full-width 4K mode is mentioned on the specs sheet, so we can safely assume it doesn’t have one. I suppose we must wait for the inevitable high-end $3k+ EOS RX for true full frame 4K video.

Canon EOS RP Review - Video - Imaging Resource
June 4, 2019 - Though every camera released in the last several years has the capability of capturing movies, only a select few of them do it well enough to be labeled as a “video camera.” So while a camera like the Sony A7 III is less of a “video camera” than, say, the Nikon Z6, they’re both usable as such. Where am I going with this? When looking at the Canon EOS RP, though it is a camera capable of video capture, its overall video features, or lack thereof, do not make it a compelling option if you’re primary focus is video.

The 4k on the RP has no usable autofocus, if you need AF: stick to 1080p.

It's a bit frustrating for video.

In default 1080p has great dual pixel AF, EIS and zero crop. It's really easy to shoot video in 1080p mode. But it looks kind of soft. 1080p Video from my older Panasonic m4/3 cams looks noticeably sharper. Even with sharp primes or L lenses.

4K mode video looks really nice and sharp. MUCH better than 1080p. But it has a massive 1.7x crop. So the widest you can get from that 24-105 in 4K mode is about 40mm equivalent. Forget shooting indoors with that crop. Many people end up buying EF-S lenses like 10-18 or 18-55 as a cheap way to get around the crop factor.

And to make it even worse, the dual pixel AF doesn't work in 4K mode. So you pretty much have to manual focus. Also, 4K is only possible in the specific video mode on the dial. The quick access video record button only does 1080p.

For the price, there are a lot of better options if video is a priority. Most similarly priced crop cameras will do better video quality. Possibly even some 1" compacts.

Gordon Laing posted some video samples in 4K and 1080p. You can see how much softer the 1080p is as well as how huge the difference in crop factor is.

r/canon on Reddit: best use of Canon RP for video
July 25, 2022 -

Hey all

my friend wants me to record a concert, I've got a Canon RP. I almost exclusively use it for photos so I need advice on the best use for it.

Do I need the webcam kit? (plug in battery, USB cable?)

Should I just run it raw w/o anything plugged into it and hope for the best?

I definitely want at least 4k/30 (edited from 60 my bad). My memory card says it can do over 2 hours on it (it's a big one) so I should be good there, right?

Im' running it right now for a 15 minute test to see battery drain/quality/etc.

Thanks in advance for your tips.

I think quantum has some good things to consider. I would also try and think about what kind of thing(s) your friend is expecting. What are your audio needs? Because if they are expecting you to record audio, then you'll need a better mic than the one that is in-camera: Rodevideo Mic Go II ($100) is my favorite, but the micro version ($50) is also good. I'd also make sure you know what the venue is like? Is it a coffeehouse? where they will be stationary or is it more of a sound stage, where they can move on the stage. Do you think that you're going to have to move a lot in-between songs. If you are going to be moving, I would look at some techniques on YouTube to help stabilize the footage. If your friend has a set-list, that might help manage your 30min time limit (help you decide which songs to start/stop. I would not just record up until you hit 30min!.. in between songs so there's no break). You mentioned using your camera mostly for photos... I imagine your friend would want pictures too?? Having a set-list will help determine which songs to record video, which ones to take pictures for (maybe your friend has a preference) Lastly, you also have to think about what is going to happen post-event. How do you plan on editing the video afterwards? If you don't have a dedicated software, I strongly suggest using DaVinci. What device are you planning on editing on? Laptop or dedicated PC? You mentioned wanting to do 4k/30... I know that is what everyone likes to shoot in... BUT if you don't have a computer that can handle that kind of video footage, the post processing can be painful!! I'd suggest just using 1080 until you get some experience with your workflow. I've never used the RP, but I believe 1080 also has the added benefit that there is no crop...

How the Canon EOS RP Enables Hassle-Free Filmmaking
April 1, 2019 - Recording with minimal noise is also possible, thanks to the wide range of ISO sensitivities in the EOS RP: in 4K, it’s between 100 – 12,800, whereas the ISO range can be expanded up to 102,400 for full HD movies. This means that you can shoot films at any time of the day and in dimly-lit venues! Sample 4K footage: Watch this short movie by filmmaker Takayuki Akachi as he seeks out everything red in ordinary life in this short 4K video recorded entirely on the Canon EOS RP.

The RP has Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) and Bluetooth 4.1, with the usual Canon Camera Connect app support. Like Nikon’s SnapBridge, this allows for wireless transfer of images, wireless control of camera, and even GPS tagging. The RP uses SD cards, and the slot (in the battery compartment) is UHS-II compliant. You don’t need a particularly fast card—though make sure that it’s fast enough for video recording you want to do—as the frame rate is maxed out at 4 fps with continuous autofocus (5 fps without), and the camera has a surprisingly large buffer.

From the video’s write-up, and interesting argument is made for the 4K video crop factor at least being reduced: “What got me interested on is the crop factor of this EOS-RP. This camera has reduced the crop from (1.76x EOS-R) to now 1.6x. Its almost like a Super 35mm Camera. Even though there are some specs got missing. Such as the Canon Log, Dual Pixel AF disabled in 4K, and no 10Bit colour.
